A Tourist Guide To The Colonial Zone, Santo Domingo


Santo Domingo is the oldest city within the New World and was created by Christopher Columbus and his younger brother, Bartholomew Columbus, inside 1496. The part on the city inhabited found in the first 1500's is called the Colonial Zone (Zona Colonial in Spanish). The Colonial Zone features of several firsts just for the New World. The very first paved street, hospital, monastery, castle, cathedral, university, then fortress - to name a few. With beautiful structure as well as the rich history, the Colonial Zone is critical see while visiting Santo Domingo. The Colonial Zone is labeled as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In the Colonial Zone, along with the look of the historical buildings, you are going to find: hotels, restaurants, cafes, museums, bars, shops, and so on. The two most prominent streets within the Colonial Zone are Calle Las Damas (the street of the girls) and Calle Conde. Calle Las Damas was the street the girls of high society travelled after church on their way to lunch. Calle Las Damas is an excellent block during the day, however, it becomes all the more amazing at night as the street lights turn the wall surfaces of the structures a beautiful orange hue. With each action you tackle the first paved street of the New World, you travel again deeper on time until you feel as though you are in the 1500's walking next to Christopher Columbus himself.


Hotels


There are lots of hotels to select from and they offer a wide variety of prices from affordable to elegant. What is great about the economical hotels in this area is they are clean and staffed with people which are friendly - with many speaking English. Keep in mind that these're old buildings, and, while they are clean, most rooms are tiny and have &quot;Old Building&quot; issues. Still, for the cost, I assume they offer an effective experience in a fantastic area. There are lots of of these hotels with many offering different specials at times that are different, thus it is hard to recommend one specific hotel. The reason I love the hotels in this area is that whenever you go out the door of your hotel, you don't need to pay a taxi to help you move to a spot to have. You are already in the # 1 destination spot in Santo Domingo.


On the bigger end, one can find several hotels to enjoy, although I am going to talk regarding Hodelpa Nicolas De Ovando. This resort has ample guest rooms, a great courtyard out back to appreciate the evenings, a tiny bar, food which is good for the breakfast buffet, and for an evening meal they have a fantastic menu, but the best two elements of this hotel are its history and its architecture. Nicolas de Ovando, a journeying companion of Christopher Columbus, was the 3rd governor of the Indies and this hotel used to be his home and dates back to 1502.
