Four Roles of Social Activism

One of the best things that human beings have created is social activism. This can be seen in all areas of life. From the fight against racism and sexism to political activism and aid movements, social activism is a force for change that makes the world a better place. Activism is also a key component of social justice, which is the belief that social problems can be solved by changing the way people behave. This is why people are encouraged to get active in social movements and other civil matters.


There are many ways in which social activism can take form. It can be as simple as spreading awareness of a problem or a way to help a human rights abuse victim get legal advice. More complex tactics include organizing protests, lobbying leaders or lawmakers, participating in town hall meetings and agitating for changes in policy or culture.


One popular type of social action or social activism is that of civil disobedience. This includes acts of disobedience such as sitting during the national anthem, wearing black shirts to protest Apartheid, or even the civil rights movements of the 1960s. Activists engaged in civil disobedience are seen by other people as heroes for their actions. The tactics they use to affect change are unique, and some can be highly effective. However, they usually do not lead to lasting change.

For instance, let's say a local environmentalist begins to gather signatures on a petition, and he understands the importance of saving the environment, yet has no idea how to implement his ideas.


There are many examples of where social activism can go wrong. If an organizer of an environmentalist demonstration does not know about local planning regulations, he may be causing damage. If he cannot provide information on how to save the forest, his plan will fail. A social activist may use illegal methods to get publicity. Let's look at a few examples:


Activists can play four different roles in any activism. They can be organizers/leaders, followers/fighters, activists and sponsors/supporters. Organizers play the role of deciding what type of movement is needed, determining a goal and choosing the right strategy for movement building. They also can inspire other people to join the movement, negotiate with existing corporations and run for political office as an independent candidate. Activists who follow other activists through direct action may also take the role of sponsors/supporters, helping with donations, fundraising and keeping the grass roots strong.


The best way to succeed in any type of social activism is to have a plan. It is important that a human rights advocate has the skills, expertise and motivation to make successful decisions. A successful plan must include goals, short and long-term plans, tactics and organizing tactics. A successful human rights advocate can also work as a manager for the cause, work as a teacher or leader and even take part in community development projects.
