The American Basketball Association, or ABA, instituted the three-point line from the very start, and it was a huge success. The National Basketball Association is better known as the NBA. It boasts one of the largest courts in basketball. You can either paint your own court or use a pre-made solution. But, the official dimensions are what will make your pickup games even more fun. The restricted areas are designated by the rectangles and are marked on the court with the endlines. The boundary line is a combination of the end lines and sidelines that limits the playing court. A further boundary line of contrasting colour is used to define the court. It must be at least 2m in width. A semicircle with a six-foot radius extends from the foul line. Lines are drawn along both sides of the key three feet apart to mark the standing positions for players when they attempt a free throw. They start with a box that's seven feet from the baseline and one-foot wide. The diagram to the right shows the free-throw rebound areas along the restricted area. These are reserved for players during free throws. The sport's rules have changed a lot since then, but the baskets still hang exactly where Dr. Naismith put them.
