The location of the oil pump depends on the application. In some applications, the oil pump is generally located just behind the torque converter at the front of the transmission. In others, it is located in the valve body. The converter hub on the rear of the torque converter drives the pump. On some applications, the oil pump is driven by a shaft that is connected to the torque converter. In all applications, the oil pump provides fluid to the torque converter. It keeps the torque converter filled with oil for proper transmission operation. The oil pump housing may also provide support for the torque converter stator and the planetary gearsets.

The oil pump provides fluid flow, and this fluid flow develops into an operating pressure that transmits force and motion. The oil pump lubricates the components in the transmission, and circulates fluid throughout the transmission to transfer heat. The oil pump circulates the hot fluid to the cooler and transfers heat to the engine coolant. Next, the cool fluid circulates throughout the transmission via the lube circuits. If the pump fails to operate to specification, the transmission will encounter a partial or total malfunction.

The oil pump flow creates pressure to operate the clutches, bands, and gearsets in the transmission. The pressure applies the clutches to hold or drive the planetary members of the gearset, and the band and servo assembly to hold the planetary member. System pressure also operates valves in the valve body.
