The Nanjing Day Trip You Don't Need a Tour Guide For

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

More commonly called the Ming Tombs - a sibling of those in Beijing; the pair form a UNESCO World Heritage site - this's the last catching your zzz's place belonging to the Hongwu Emperor, founder of the Ming Dynasty. Construction needed over twenty years of laboring by several 100,000 workers and 5,000 guards. The mausoleum is established inside a verdant park which makes for a nice break from in the city Nanjing's concrete expanse.

Sun Yat sen Mausoleum

Sun Yat-sen was the first president on the Republic of China party; it ruled modern-day China through 1912 to 1949, until the party - by then known as the Kuomintang - was run out by the Communists as well as retreated to Taiwan. Given that a rift continues to exist today between Mainland China and Taiwan, it's surprising that Dr. Sun continues to be revered by not just those in Taiwan but also numerous within Mainland China.

Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall

It took approximately 50 years due to the government to build a memorial to the more than 300,000 victims on the Nanjing Massacre, though the end result is an expansive tribute to all those who lost the lives of theirs during the Japanese intrusion. The museum is well laid out with very moving displays of historical records, videos, and objects that have been uncovered sticking to the city's pillaging.

Presidential Palace

It is not very much to look at on the exterior, but Nanjing's Presidential Palace is a worthwhile stop: You are able to envision the rooms exactly as they had been when Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai shek sat in them plotting whatever they thought can be the future of China. The building housed the office of President around the Republic of China until the Kuomintang left to Taiwan throughout 1949, following the Communist defeat. Some background knowledge over the Kuomintang vs. the Nationalists and also on the Taiping Rebellion is very helpful, because the placards are located in Chinese. As with Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum, it is interesting that this website - where the fight against China's current ruling party was planned - is so heavily frequented by Mainland Chinese visitors.
