The Way An Autistic Child Has Changed A Career... For Your Better - 12 Decades Later

In 2006 I wrote of Patty's and my decision to homeschool our son Trevor to help provide a learning environment much more conducive with his adultery. It's now twelve decades later and the time to write about how things worked out.


Trevor began seventh grade with a customized schooling plan. Patty focused on language and arts and I concentrated on math and science. He also attended a homeschool-assisted faculty which supplied English and mathematics classes and attended a science class in the middle school he'd have normally attended. The program plan was designed by Patty and me together with Trevor's school counselor. see this here ended up being a hybrid of homeschooling and classic schooling which we felt gave Trevor that the best likelihood of success. Trevor's counselor was totally awesome in working with us and putting Trevor's well-being first. The blended schooling worked very nicely in seventh grade, but we noticed that Trevor wasn't getting enough peer socialization. In eighth grade we decided to initiate the process of mainstreaming him back into the public-school system. Patty continued attention on arts and language and math and science topics were now being supplied by Trevor's middle school. I like to joke I was fired as a homeschool teacher and my wife and boy did the shooting. In fact the mainstreaming was the right answer because it allowed him to get desired socialization through spending additional time in college while at the same time giving him some extra 1:1 focus through homeschooling. In ninth grade we believed Trevor was ready to be fully mainstreamed into the public-school system. While we packed up our homeschool materials, our involvement with Trevor's education and socialization expansion was still powerful.

Ninth through 12th grade attracted some high points but also brought a lot of struggle. He had difficulty telling the difference between kids mocking him being a friend. Since he had been behind his peers in his social interaction abilities, he would say and do things that weren't appropriate. check this out 'd have a couple of close friends who had been real in their friendship, some of which he is still friends with today. her explanation was his first &quot;clique&quot;, and while some in the club took advantage of Trevor's autism, many accepted and looked for him.


Feeling the leap from high school to a large university could be too drastic for him, he attended a local junior college for 2 years while living at home. He'd developed a passion for movies and photography, so he decided to major in film studies with an emphasis in photography. discover this of these years were foundational for Trevor's expansion because he continued to progress academically while also letting him work on design and adaptation skills. In his sophomore year he decided he wanted to transfer to a four-year university majoring in film and media studies. His decision on where to proceed was an outstanding example of decision making through empirical data analysis and pros/cons articulation. He developed a visibility board using numerous decision criteria for example offering of major, familiarity with family, and church offerings. He finally decided on Arizona State, comfortable through his investigation this was the best option. It was during that time that Trevor wrote about his experiences growing up with autism in Six-Word Lessons on Growing Up Autistic.


Back in August 2013 we took Trevor into the ASU Tempe campus, helped him set up his dorm room, and left him to begin his junior year of college. While sales was a bit unnerving being a million miles away from him, we had peace in knowing there were a number of family members in the region including Trevor's big sister Briana who had been now a nurse in nearby Scottsdale. His past two decades of school have been those of enormous growth. He had to figure out a great deal of things on his own, make new friends, and be responsible for his own research. Luckily, he plugged to a church band that has been walking distance from ASU. He fit in like a glove and the church team was a high point of the time in ASU. He must experience living and dealing with roommates, the majority of which he believed were too immature for him. We got several difficulty calls when he lost his pocket, had computer difficulties, or was having difficulty coping with a few situations.


read this -college life has been filled with a lot of anxiety. Now he was out of college and it was time to support himself. He also didn't have a job upon graduation, so Patty and I decided to hire him into our firm as our Media Director. He was used by us for 17 months where we got to help him build good work habits. We instituted a monthly inspection procedure called &quot;dones&quot; where at the start of the month he would lay out exactly what he would have done from the end of the month, that we'd then review in the beginning of the next month. This was an outstanding procedure in that all three of us were aligned as to what he had to do, and he was held accountable for getting things done. His marketing missions have been flourishing, such as being interviewed by two local TV news channels.


Today Trevor is 26. He resides on his own in a condo we bought for him and two additional tenants on the autism spectrum. He pays rent, he manages his own money, he is as self sufficient as any 26-year-old. He's still got some challenges that he'll continue to get for the rest of his life. He'll always want someone else to help coach him throughout scenarios. It was lots of hard work on most of our components, but Patty and I are excited about his future and are grateful that we're in a position to help Trevor.
