Digital News Initiative Creates European Journalism Partnerships

The Digital News Initiative (DNI) is a European organization established by Google to support high quality journalism through innovative technology. It encompasses an "Innovation Lab" worth hundreds of millions of pounds, which in its first year issued grants to 461 different projects in thirty countries across Europe. One of the most popular of these was the award of a seed competition to a French company that wanted to use mobile phone technology to publish news on the movement of animals. This project used a cutting-edge technology platform and produced one of the most successful news stories I have ever seen.

However, as exciting as this story was, it is far from the first of many remarkable stories that the digital news initiative has delivered in the last few months. In September it announced plans to expand its presence in the U.K., where it currently operates in four cities. It also revealed plans to launch five new markets over the next two years, bringing the total number of its markets to over 70. agency will extend its reach into Asia and Africa later on. This is a truly ambitious agenda and one that I believe will prove to be successful in the long term.

But it is not only the expansion of destinations that the digital news initiative has in store for publishers. In a previous article I highlighted the role of social media in encouraging publishers to embrace this media as a means to increase reader engagement. Now it seems that the initiative has taken that concept one step further, with the addition of an Innovation Lab to the digital news organization. This team will be led by Managing Editor Paul Wright. He will be responsible for the creation of new stories based on stories submitted by real reporters and feature articles that are chosen to match the theme of the digital news platform.

Wright will oversee the development of the first product from the Working Group, a social media management service that will be launched in the second half of 2021. The working group was co-opted by digital news publishers as a way to gain more influence in the industry and to ensure that consumers will turn to their platforms when engaging with news. It is expected that the first product will be launched in the second half of the year, with additional products due for release every subsequent six months. The aim is to create a comprehensive set of services that will leverage social media to bring more consumers to digital news publishers.

The second innovation stems from the fact that Digital News Initiative now has its own in-house innovation team. The team is led by Managing Editor Paul Wright. Other members of the Working Group include Associate Editor Ben Collins and Product Developer Martin Thompson. Together they are focusing on three areas of focus. They are looking at how to improve the experience for consumers using digital news; how to improve the revenue model that the company will have to rely on in the future; and how to use the experience and knowledge of the journalism team to drive innovation within the company.

Another innovation refers to the European Journalism Consultative Group, which was founded last autumn in order to promote European journalism. It is made up of business interests from across Europe and includes media outlets, newspapers, magazines and universities. This group is aiming to enhance the range of European journalism and bring it closer to the consumer, as well as facilitating dialogue between the public and the media. In parallel to this, Digital News Initiative has launched a project entitled "Open Sources", which will allow users of social platforms to submit articles and news stories.

Finally, the last piece of innovation involves the launch of a new platform for European journalism. This is being developed by a consortium of news publishers, including five large publishing companies. Digital News Initiative will manage the platform and acts as its online editorial board. It will publish material from traditional media sources, including national daily newspapers and digital news channels.

The Digital News Initiative and the European Journalism Consultative Group are part of the broader EU Association for Journalist Participation (DNI JEP). This multi-partnership body was established in May 2021 with the help of the Commission for Promotion of the Media and Journalism (CPJ). The CPJ is a network of media experts that provides support to European journalism. Other members of the alliance are the German Federal Ministry of Defense, the Netherlands Ministry of Culture and the Polish Agency for Publications, to name a few.
