PDW artist and animators- character design lecture

Have strong design, strong and fun shapes, interesting colors, draw yourself as a character, use reference when drawing yourself, use photographs, really think about the things that make you YOU

You can also have a interpretation of yourself, you don’t need a background for this assignment, there’s also more life drawing style, less exaggerated, interpret yourself, go through your closet and take photos of yourself for reference.
References are very important, when people look at your work, they’re not wowed by design or depth as much as the drawing, if it’s a conservative or more abstract drawing, it’s still about the quality of the drawing which is dependent on the reference you used. You can do 3 different variations, or you can do 1 and make it very detailed. Include thumbnails if you want, they’re not quick sketches as much as they are tiny little illustrations,

Draw directly and make decisions on what you want to do with the proportions, mixed media is pretty cool. Look at fashion art for inspiration.

She has good use of design, and space. Everything on the page is thought about, nothing is just thrown in, and everything is well composed. One sketchbook page a day.
When you relax and slow down, think about what you’re doing as a piece of art, it’s a study, but also work it into. Apiece of art. Don’t just add colors in the background, do great drawings and bring the drawing forward without distracting from the drawing. Keep building your notes and take some notes. When the class is over, you can get together and do zoom meetings and everyone encourages each other to do sketchbook pages and make yourself accountable. Tamara has a great CalArts sketchbook. Shoot for her level.

Instruction:

You will submit 1-3 designs on separate sheets of paper

- Each sheet will include the main drawing of a clothed person in full 3/4 view, and thumbnail sketches around it if you choose

- Be sure to draw from reference

- Costumes and props are OK, but no background please

- Each page--including thumbnails--should take at least one hour

- Draw slowly to capture the details (e.g., folds, wrinkles and contour)

- Work with pen and color/s (e.g., pastels, paint, markers)--no pencils. Color is optional.

- Hand drawn or digital is fine
