Lagos on Portugal's Algarve Travel Guide

Placed around the south west coastline of Portugal, Lagos is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve. Just 10 miles from Portimao and 50 far from Faro, the town is a historic seaport, flourishing market town and attractive beach resort. The community itself is a fishing harbour set in a gorgeous bay and surrounded by crumbling walls. Vacation packages to Lagos give visitors the opportunity to appreciate the real Portugal in a vibrant environment along with charm and sophistication. The existing pedestrianised old town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets with whitewashed houses, attractive squares, beautiful architecture, historical and cultural attractions such as museums and churches.

Lagos has a broad range of beaches ranging from little secluded cove to the huge expanses of the amazing Meia Praia. The principle Meia Praia beach, on the east of Lagos, is a magnificent stretch of sand and shingle that could be reached by bus or ferry. There are many beaches located on the promontory to the south of the city. This coast comes with a mix of very small coves, strange rock formations, grottos and caves. Visitors should try the beautiful cove at Praia do Pinhao and the picturesque Praia de Dona Ana. In case you're searching for seclusion then top to Praia da Dona Ana due to its numerous small coves and grottos. Holidays to Lagos offering a range of water sports including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, jet-skiing and scuba diving at equally Meia Praia and Porto de Mos. Meia Praia is a busy two mile stretch of sandy beach, the longest in the Algarve.

Exploring the place surrounding Lagos is a requirement on your travel offers to Portugal, like visits to the intriguing villages in the low hills on to the north of Lagos. You can find loads of alternative excursions to take, like trips into the Monchique Mountains, Cape St Vincent, Barao de Sao Joao National Park, Silves Castle and the interesting town of Loule. Explore the Algarve coastline on a champagne cruise or even dolphin safari with a lot of excursions available from the harbour area.

There is a great deal on offer for children in Lagos including Lagos Zoological Park and the Lagos Slide and Splash which is among the Algarve's very best water parks with something to keep all ages entertained.

Away from the beach there a few outstanding golf courses which offer impressive ocean views.

Holidays in Lagos would not be complete without a spot of shopping. The town has a widely used monthly store, chic boutiques and lots of opportunities to purchase facial lace, jewellery and copperware.

You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out on Lagos. A good number of restaurants serve traditional and International cuisine and some scrumptious seafood and fish dishes on outdoor terraces where you take in the great perspectives throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Many restaurants and bars may be found in the large marina.

Lagos offers some exciting nightlife which includes some excellent nightclubs and a great range of cocktail bars. Mix these with the many trendy bars, late nighttime jazz bars as well as pavement cafes and you have something to suit everyone.

With a flight time frame of less than 3 working hours coming from the UK and also over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, Lagos could be the ideal choice for a seaside holiday in Portugal. During July and August temperature levels reach around 30C, with wintertime heat consistently hovering around 17C. The summer season via May to October views temperatures never dipping below 20C with twelve hours of sunshine one day from June right through to August. Holidays to Lagos are popular with Brits looking for some warmth and sunshine during the cold months of winter. Spring sees temperatures across the 20C mark with ten hours of sunshine one day and winter months see temperatures around 17C with 6 hours of sunshine 1 day and little rainfall.
