Polydactyl cats (a.k.a. mitten felines, thumb cats, Hemingway felines, or Cardi pet cats) have a little additional somethin'-- toes, that is-- making them extraordinary felines.
Polydactyly, or other toes, is a relatively common feline attribute. Nevertheless, it's not unique to cats, as it likewise happens in people and various other species like canines, hens, mice, and guinea pigs. The term's origin is Greek; poly indicating lots of, plus dactyls, indicating fingers or toes. Most domestic pet cats have 18 toes-- 5 on both front paws and four on each hind paw. Polydactyl cats can have one or two extra toes, which are typically on their front feet.
How Do Polydactyl Cats Obtain Their Additional Toes?
The extra toes arise from a hereditary anomaly when a mutant Pd genetics leads in one or both parents. Nevertheless, veterinarian Dr. Drew Weigner of the all-feline method The Feline Physician in Atlanta explains that there is still some controversy about polydactyly genetics in felines. And, that probably, there is more than one genetic basis for this condition, and also the results are quite variable.
Nonetheless, if one pet cat mom and dad has other toes, there's a high possibility that a few of the offspring will certainly be polydactyl, as well. And, if both moms and dads have extra toes, the chance of polydactyl kittycats increases.
There Are Two Kinds of Polydactyl Cats
Pre-axial polydactyly refers to different figures on the inside, or what would be the thumb side, of the paw. Post-axial polydactyly describes other toes being positioned on the outer side where the little finger would be on a hand. The innermost extra toes on the front paws are often opposable, offering those felines extraordinary skill to open doors and also drawers. And also a lot more mischievousness!
Nicknames for Polydactyl Cats
These other toes can make a pet cat's paw look like they are wearing mittens, giving rise to many descriptive labels such as "mitten cat" as well as "thumb pet cat." And, because of their history, they are additionally typically referred to as Cardi cats and also Hemingway felines.
Cardi Cats
This name describes the Cardigan district in Wales in the United Kingdom, which is known to have a significant populace of polydactyl cats. Polydactyl pet cats were taken into consideration to be fortunate by seafarers. Also, it's thought that such pet cats traveling aboard ships might have been given the New Globe by English Puritans in the 1600s.

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in Secret West, Florida, the former home of the great American storyteller, is home to a clowder of polydactyl felines, all descendants of the writer's favorite feline, Snow White. This white six-toed feline was offered to Hemingway as a present by a ship's captain friend.
The tag "Hemingway cats" shows Hemingway's love for polydactyls. Ernest Hemingway called his pet cats after his renowned good friends, and the museum staff has continued this custom. If you visit, look out for Harry Truman and Betty Grable among the 45-plus felines who like to come with guests around the premises and the residence.
Mani-pedis for Polydactyls
" Due to the irregularity in the expression of polydactyly in felines, some added toes tend 'ingrown' claws," Dr. Weigner discusses. "These claws will certainly need to be cut routinely to avoid infection. Likewise, added toes can be susceptible to injury, specifically if they don't have bones attached to the rest of the paw." It's essential to constantly check your feline's toes and nails and, even more so, if you deal with a polydactyl kitten.
