The Story of the Waterless Urinal - Part 1 - Idea and Development

The concept of a waterless urinal was the brainchild of German engineer Ditmar Gorges, who thought that a sterile liquid for example urine needed no flushing - it could find its way down the sink anyway. He was confident that his invention will be instrumental in saving so many gallons of water every year. All he needed was someone rich and influential to back his idea. Little did he are aware that his benefactor was sitting just a couple of hundred miles away in their posh LA office.

James Krug's illustrious career in show business started 20 years back. He had tasted success, serving in leadership positions at Disney, where he was Vice President within the eighties and subsequently operated a distribution company with fellow Disney members through the nineties. But he wished to try a new challenge and was probing different entrepreneurial avenues.

In 1999, he was brought to Ditmar Gorges by way of a mutual acquaintance. The idea of a waterless urinal piqued his interest and also the environment implications of the invention were immediately apparent to him. In a world where the need for preserving natural resources couldn't be emphasized enough, Krug pointed out that he stumbled onto something, an invention that can revolutionize how precious water may be saved. This was the start a company collaboration.

California would have been a good spot to begin the organization, where 1/5th of electricity was consumed by pumping water and the like an invention could contribute significantly towards environment. Krug and Gorges christened their new company Falcon Waterfree Technologies, spreading the material around to numerous people as you can. But More Info needed a fantastic characteristic; a San-Diego company had been marketing waterless urinals in the past number of years with no success.

Krug invented an excellent idea - the true money belly from marketing the replaceable cartridges that can be placed inside urinal's waterless receptacles. The plastic cartridge put together by Gorges contained a liquid sealant, which would allow water to give, but trap sewer gases underneath preventing them from escaping outside. All this without having a trickle of water processed - an answer for the conventional urinals the place that the water pools generated after every flush would trap the sewer gases.

The $40 cartridge, which required replacement after seven thousand uses, was obviously a sure shot profit maker. Krug's strategy would have been to sell the urinal with a low priced and compel the customers into purchasing the cartridges. He found plenty of investors prepared to risk their cash for this new invention, with cable television magnate Marc Nathanson making a big investment in Falcon in 2000. By 2001, output of the waterless urinal, called U1P began. Subsequently, former Vice President and environmentalist Al Gore came fully briefed as Falcon Waterfree's advisor. In 2006, first eBay President Jeff Skoll also invested a substantial amount inside the company.

Krug and Gorges were understandably ecstatic about it invention - there have been no latest advancements to talk of in urinal technology plus a waterless urinal could be the first bold step. But they we had not anticipated the bumpy road ahead.
