A German comedy about pirates, the fear quickly arises that it could be a 1 ½ knight reloaded, in which now plundering privateers instead of noble nobles squeal around in the area. But far from it. Sven Taddicken's corsair comedy “Twelve Meters Without a Head” is not a simple parody of the curse of the Caribbean films, but reveals a very unique approach to the genre. What if Klaus Störtebeker and Gödeke Michels had swapped places because the daredevil Störtebeker suddenly mutated into a cowardly coward as a result of a near-death experience? The answer to this question is amusing, gripping and yet has a small flaw: Because the production lacked the money for even more deep-sea brawls, the second half lacks a bit of the necessary noise.

The pirate gang of Klaus Störtebeker (Ronald Zehrfeld) and Gödeke Michels (Matthias Schweighöfer) stands for fun and riot. Together with their daring team, the buccaneer duo makes the North Sea and Baltic Sea unsafe. But the constant pirate battles and the permanent fear of the hunters of the Hanseatic League have left their mark. When Störtebeker is critically injured while boarding a ship, he begins to have doubts. Does he really want to continue sailing the seas with a horde of thugs or would he rather lead a simple life with his pretty, down-to-earth friend Bille (Franziska Wulf) and grow potatoes? Michels does not agree with this change of his best friend at all. In order not to endanger Störtebeker's legendary reputation, he quickly takes over his role as a flaming pirate captain ...
When a citizen is chatting about the current economic situation in the first scene, one already thinks they are in a historical slapstick à la “1 ½ Ritter”, Tell or Year One. But puff cake. “Twelve meters without a head” focuses on a contemporary buddy movie including modern language and music, in which the pirate setting acts as an exotic background. The male friendship between Klaus Störtebeker and Gödeke Michels is precisely worked out. After Störtebeker's transformation into a warm shower sensitive, he asked his men to talk to the group about their problems. Klaus Störtebeker as an old 1968 educator - that has something. Gödeke Michels, on the other hand, is and will remain a thoroughbred pirate and thus ensures the rumbling moments of the film. A successful division of labor.

Unfortunately, this fascinating approach gets a bit chatty as the story progresses. The Pirate Round is very reminiscent of an open sea party conference of the Greens. The overwhelming success of the Pirates of the Caribbean films helped director Taddicken (Emma's luck) to get his project funded at all, but at the same time the series set the bar for kaper action very high. In contrast to Gore Verbinski's world success, “Twelve Meters Without a Head” is a rather local North German pirate film - with its own charm, but without the really big set pieces.

... Klaus Störtebeker actor Ronald Zehrfeld.
To compensate for this, the Hanse trio, who is responsible for humor and consists of Devid Striesow (Yella, I've never been so happy), Alexander Scheer (Sonnenallee, Das wilde Leben) and Milan Peschel (Free Rainer, mid-August), will be shooting in the in the second half. Striesow gives the Störtebeker arch enemy Simon von Utrecht as a modern politician, while Scheer and Peschel embody the somewhat different bounty hunter duo Lange and Schocke, who follow in the footsteps of the boys from the C.S.I. determined the caliber of the cannonball based on a charred corpse.
Former GDR judoka Ronald Zehrfeld (The Red Cockatoo, In Every Second), who without the fall of the Berlin Wall would even have had the chance to participate in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, is immediately relieved of the daring bully simply because of his stature. That is why it seems all the more surprising when Zehrfeld suddenly portrays the legendary pirate captain, in fact, almost intimate. In contrast to this, the comparatively slight Matthias Schweighöfer (solo album, Keinohrhasen, Der rote Baron, Friendship!) As Gödeke Michels gives the monkey a lot of sugar. Guest star Simon Gosejohann (Horst Schlämmer - Isch is a candidate!) He even wants to cut the eggs in one scene because he dared to approach his ex-girlfriend Okka (Jana Pallaske, Männerherzen, Inglourious Basterds).
Conclusion: "Twelve meters without a head" is a heavily cast buddy movie with an exciting approach to the pirate genre, but which lacks the hoped-for enter action. In this sense: Fuck the Hanseatic League!
