Butt boy

123Movies la

Director Tyler Cornack ("The Pocketeers") and his co-writer Ryan Koch came up with a really good idea for a 1970s police film: A tough cop with drinking problems chases a serial killer - and soon suspects that it is the wanted one of all people, it could be its own sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous.

An intense game of cat and mouse quickly emerges from the tricky situation - and the retro psychological thriller is ready! Oh yes, and they had a second idea: The killer eliminates his victims by literally shoving them up his ass (which also makes him stronger and stronger). "Butt Boy" is ready ... and it is nowhere near as shitty as the rectal approach might sound at first!

Even a butt boy starts small ...

After his proctologist stuck a finger up his bum, the IT specialist and family man Chip Gutchell (director Tyler Cornack himself) woke up to the irrepressible desire to cram things in the very best - living beings included. After a baby from the park has also fallen victim to him, Chip tries to take his own life - without success.

Nine years later, Chip, who is misappropriating Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to control his anal addiction, sponsors alcoholic detective Russell Fox (Tyler Rice). While Chip suffers a relapse and shoves an employee's son up the ass, Russell slowly tracks him down ...

Against all expectations

That sounds like trash in the bottom drawer. But that's not exactly what it is - instead, contrary to all expectations, “Butt Boy” turns out to be a really well-made thriller in the style of a typical 1970s police noir: Despite the pleasantly seldom translucent budget constraints, Tyler Cornack hits pretty much every point the tone of the satirized genre ...

... and at the same time he pulls his plot through with a consistency and seriousness that one would not have thought possible in view of a serial killer who shoved his ass in the ass: It is precisely this gap between the premise that is borderline and the quality of craftsmanship that makes “Butt Boy” so worth seeing.

Full of shit: a butt boy victim can barely get away with his life.

While the viewer tries to process the fact that Chip has already pushed the cute family dog and a kidnapped baby into the back in the first five minutes, between him and his new protégé at the Alcoholics Anonymous (who at every interrogation - true to seventies - bangs the legs on the table) a really exciting psycho duel.

For a long time, the makers seem to really resist having to acknowledge the indisputable absurdity of their own film plot - and so they create intense character moments like a "heat" reminiscence in a diner, which in themselves sometimes work extremely well , but still seem mercilessly misplaced in the context of the plot. You basically get a good thriller and your own parody served in one and the same second.

The dam is broken

Only in the final third Tyler Cornack and his colleagues let their film off the leash unconditionally: But even if "Butt Boy" finally gives in to his own bizarre skin, hair and excrement, the result is still not pubescent trash ...

... instead, the cop thriller develops into a psychedelic-absurd black splatter-and-shit comedy that is less reminiscent of the usual gore trash than a mixture of the Nicolas Cage madness “Mandy” and the Dadaist surrealism of Quentin Dupieux ("Rubber", "Monsieur Killerstyle") remembers. You probably have to see it yourself to be able to believe it ...

Conclusion: completely different - and much better - than expected!
