35 000 LOYALISTS settled in Nova Scotia. lured by the economic potential of the colony, its British common-law system, and the fact that it was English-speaking. But a major part of them coming was because rebel forces that over threw great Britain persecuted all who were loyal to Britain. Only 10 000 loyalist families took up residence in the Province of Quebec. 100 000 in British north america.

They were persecuted(Treated unfairly too) in the US for being loyalists (Loyal to Britain), and most forced to run away from their land, homes, and possession.

The Constitutional act of 1791 Recognized that there were two dominant groups in the colony, (English and french). And each group had different religious, political, and legal outlooks and had different economic and land owning traditions. To show these differences, Carleton created two separate colonies, upper Canada and lower Canada, (Ontario, Quebec). Separate French from English leaving all their traditions and outlooks and political things intact.

War of 1812 winner=Canadians, the victory helped build support among people for the fight against the Americans, and because of this more men signed up when the cal for militia members went out.

Oligarchy:a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.

Reponsible Government: Responsible government refers to a government that is responsible to the people. In Canada responsible government is more commonly described as an executive or Cabinet that is dependent on the support of an elected assembly, rather than on the monarch.

Durham(man):John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham AKA: Lord Durham (Governor General)
Finding include, the actual inhabitants of these Provinces have no security for person or property--no enjoyment of what they possess--

Reccomendation: Durham recommended that Upper and Lower Canada be united into one province.
encouraged immigration to Canada from Britain, to overwhelm the existing numbers of French Canadians with the hope of assimilating them into British culture

Act of Union 1840, was enacted in July 1840 and proclaimed February 10, 1841. It abolished the legislatures of Lower Canada and Upper Canada and established a new political entity, the Province of Canada to replace them.
This act effected the political union of the Province of Canada, and was similar in nature and in goals to the other Acts of Union enacted by the British Parliament.

Confederation:
The Great Coalition
Movement for Maritime Union
The Charlottetown conference
The Quebec conference

British act: The British North America Acts 1867–1975 are the original names of a series of Acts at the core of the constitution of Canada. They were enacted by the Parliament of the United Kingdom and the Parliament of Canada. In Canada, some of the Acts were amended or repealed by the Constitution Act, 1982. The rest were renamed in Canada as the Constitution Acts. In the United Kingdom, those Acts that were passed by the British Parliament remain under their original names. The term "British North America" (BNA) refers to the British colonies in North America.
