Georgia Saltwater Fishing Report - 03/13/2010

This entire month has become a fight with winter, fresh water run-off and big tides here on the Georgia Coast. Sports Fishing Cairns rains north of here, the freshwater rivers dump it all to the Atlantic around Jekyll Island Georgia and St. Simons Island Georgia.

Just so happens, this is where we do the whole fishing! Well, first off, fresh water by the gazillions of tons isn't good enough... Then, hope that fresh rain water warms. Not happening any time soon, that's for sure. Rain water is cold, and also the weather isn't warm yet, so we're stuck with it for two more weeks from inshore around 10 miles offshore.

So, we make the best of a bad situation. We go offshore. Even with Red Snapper fishing closed, we have several tricks in the bag. And, I don't want to catch small fish, and we all turn to catching HUGE sheepshead spawning about the offshore reefs.

Sheepshead eat pretty much as well as Snapper along with the definitely fight every bit as good or maybe even harder than the usual Snapper.

The bait used is pretty different and harder to research, the fiddler crab. Most people have heard about this sort of fishing, however it is mainly done on fishing piers and also the backwater with live shrimp or fresh cut shrimp.

If you haven't been offshore on the reefs for Sheepshead, Georgia happens when to get it done. The fish can exceed 10 pounds and so on light casting tackle, the correct answer is challenging regardless of anglers level of skill.

Drop it towards the bottom, game on around the Georgia Offshore Reefs. The slightest tap from the rod tip and you are clearly almost far too late on the hook set. They're difficult to feel about the bite and challenging to catch too. If you thought you felt something, that's him... Sheepshead earn their stripes honestly. They're thieves...hence their offshore name, "Reef Bandits".

Reef Bandits build up heavy about the nearshore reefs off Coastal Georgia in 30-60 ft. of water on wrecks, hard bottom outcroppings as well as other structure. The larger spawning sheepshead pile in during late March and early April. We suggest you limit your catch, not catch your limit on these big, hard fighting females. They're carrying the eggs, so we like to keep only enough to eat and we send the rest back off to fight another day.

Georgia is unique in the Sheepshead fishery. I haven't fished a multitude of locations in which the offshore reefs are covered with sheepies like Georgia. We are fortunate to own such a good fishery off our small coast. In the event of freshwater intruding into our normal fishing patterns, we can normally alternate to a different species and please our customers and also have a BIG TIME carrying it out... Fish hard, and enjoy yourself!

As the water temperature warms, the inshore and offshore fishing will simply recover into April and May 2010.
