Slaves, who were lowest in class and treated terribly, could not be a citizen of Athens. Nor did they have any rights or anything close to rights or freedom. Women's were looked as better than slaves, but they didn’t have any rights. They did have their freedom though. Men had all the power, they could work in the government and had the most rights. Because the government didn’t care about the people as much as they cared about money, the people had to protect themselves. When the government threw threats at other cities, like the Melians, it made Athens a target. The people would then be put in jeopardy to be attacked by angered nations. Athenians would have to protect themselves from the raths of other cities. Also, the regular people, that aren’t involved with the government, would have to help govern the rest of ordinary people because the government didn’t. This could lead to rebellion and riots.
