Lecture #5 character design trying new character styles

Copy someone drawing style when making character design, look at someone’s art and try to have a goal to reach when creating your character. Don’t copy exact character design, copy the style of talented character artists. Pick something that you’d have fun doing, don’t make yourself die from a challenge.
Problem with portfolios is that it can be scattered, try to make your portfolio focused.

Lecture #5 Artists and Animators drawing animals
Book that really helps with solid drawing- animals how to draw them (Hugh laidman)
If you can create solid forms, then you can create solid drawings/characters.
CalArts, Disney don’t want to rendered things, they want more emotion and gesture stuff
You have to find a balance between solid drawings and good designs.
Understanding the skeleton is essential for drawing any animal or creature.
Try to break down the character in simple shapes, they you can add on top of it.
Draw characters volumetrically, then you can elaborate on your own style, and make them in a new interesting way.
Skeleton is very important, understanding what’s going on underneath the surface is really helpful, it’s what they look for, they want to know that you understand how the character works. Try and get a sense of bone underneath.
Claire we fling does good cats and animals in how she has a good sense of structure. If you don’t understand the skeleton, you may not be able to draw the animal fully
Hw: draw animals, and draw their skeleton, try to look for good skeletons. Try to really understand what animal you’re going to draw.

Give thumbnail storyboards that round out the story.
You can use painting anywhere, but you must include the image and title of the famous painting as reference at the start. Work rough, loose, and gestural, have a strong line of action in your drawings. Tell a strong story, three act structure. Keep character based, turn inanimate objects into anthropology characters. 12-24 panels, full color is ok, match the style of the painting, not everything has to be in color though. Show your creative land inactive skills.
