Ayurveda describes health as a balance of energy (Doshas) principles and an enjoyable state of mind. It is holistic and recognises the link between mind and body and soul. An evaluation of psychological variables, lifestyle and current stresses is included for each Ayurvedic intake. Mental imbalances (Manovikara) are treated and not stigmatised in the illness process.

Our Ayurvedic constitution consists of three Doshas which create illnesses due to their imbalances. The unbalancing of vata generally produces anxiety and phobias, Pitta, rage, and fixation.

We all experience periods of elevation, restlessness, or lethargy. These are the mind's characteristics (Gunas). Sattva is the natural condition of the mind, which we strive to achieve for optimum mental wellness. It is light, productive and equilibrated. Ambitious and restless Rajas and sluggish and boring Tamas are. While Rajas and Tamas are necessary for labour or relaxation, their imbalance may induce anger or melancholy.

Genetic and environmental causes, the impact of time, abuse of our senses, or intentionally doing something harmful to our health, such as overeating or participating in violent arguments, can create mental health imbalances. Raising prana (life energy) and consciousness via activities like meditation enables us to choose healthier lifestyles.

Management of Ayurvedic Mental Health

Let's look at simple instances.

Case 1: Elliot is 15 years old and has a diagnosis of anxiety, darkness phobia, disrupted sleep, aches & pains, and allergies. Based on a thorough evaluation, his condition is handled via traditional Vata balancing.

Case 2: Aastha is a 27-year-old technologist with problems with rage that cost her a job. Despite her hyperacidity, she is ambitious, intelligent, restless, and over-crowded with spicy food, drinks, and late nights. In this instance, by increasing Sattva, we attempt to control Pitta's imbalance and decrease Rajas.



Case 3: Sue has a bipolar Type II illness at 49. She's extremely steady, although her mood is menopausal. We ensure that she remains on her medicine. In a typical examination, we identify problems with Agni, Vata-Pitta imbalance, a burn-out propensity and integrated channels.
