Landscaping - The Difference Between Shrubs and Trees

Trees and shrubs are a wonderful addition to any landscape, instantly transforming dull patches of land into desirable green spaces. Besides the aesthetic values they impart, planting woods really are a wise environmental and economical move. Both purify oxygen, guard against soil erosion and, like most varieties of landscaping, increase property value. Certainly, both woods are desirable landscaping elements. But precisely what is the several involving the two, and exactly what are their particular landscaping positives and negatives?

From a botanical standpoint, the gap between trees and shrubs primarily boils down to size and stem structure. According to the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to Trees, a tree is described as a woody plant with one primary stem, i.e. the trunk. The trunk's circumference is predicted to get no less than three inches in diameter. The tree itself should also be capable to grow at the very least 13 feet in height and produce a properly defined system of branches leaving. A shrub, however, is of short stature and supported by several stems that branch out of its base. It is technically easy for many different plant being both a tree and a shrub simultaneously, while using species developing being a tree in favorable climates and remaining a stunted shrub in hostile ones. Even so, whether everyone plant is to become considered a tree or possibly a shrub would be depending on the above measurements.

From a landscaper's perspective, the gap between bushes is a lot more nuanced. Shrubs are often hardier than trees, capable of survive in rugged climates across the world. This makes them ideal for landscaping in places with extreme temperatures, or where clients wish to spend minimal time and effort on maintenance. However, their association with hardiness also gives shrubs an air of toughness that produces them less preferred in residential design. Trees, however, have always been symbols of longevity and prosperity. When planted properly, they give an air of permanence and serenity that is difficult to substitute. They are therefore highly sought after by property owners, along with commercial businesses seeking a 'homey' feel.

But despite their attractiveness, trees do have several drawbacks. For one, trees may be notoriously slow growers. It can take several years to allow them to reach an important height, flower, or bear fruit. Their added stature also ensures they are excellent targets for high winds, lightening, and also other environmental hazards. Lastly, trees need regular maintenance including annual spraying and pruning. Shrubs however grow quickly, and require nothing but a periodic, easy-to-reach trim. At the end of the morning, many landscapers elect to combine shrubs and trees in their designs. Thus my site attain the best of both worlds: fast-growing, low-maintenance shrubs that act as immediate landscape accents, and attention-getting, work-intensive trees that will make strong long-term features.
