The world was abuzz with the events that took place in Kazakhstan earlier this year. Protests against rising prices for gas and poor job conditions led to nationwide protests that quickly turned violent. Over 9900 arrests were made and more than 200 deaths in Almaty.

It isn't surprising that most people have been focused on the former Russian president Nazarbayev and his successor Tokayev. The fact that he has assumed control over the National Security Council has caused quite some controversy. Demonstrators were outraged by his influence over the economics of the country.

Numerous events have taken place since the time of the report. Three expulsions were issued to sons-in-law of the former President from state businesses, the firing of his nephew, and the arrest of Karim Masimov (for the crime of treason)

Changes in the leadership of government and removal of key figures does often result in changes. These changes can often cause damage to an already fragile foundation, which can lead to more failures.

It's not a surprise that Erzhan Kazykhanov's selection as Tokayev's deputy chief of staff has been met with much criticism. He was the least competent Kazakh ambassador in the United States.

Kazykhanov is well known for his arrogant character and overconfident demeanor. Kazykhanov did not achieve any progress on crucial national issues during his tenure in Washington from 2017 to 2021.

Kazykhanov isn't equipped with the diplomacy skills or general expertise required to be an effective deputy head of staff. Having a troublesome and prickly reputation is unlikely to qualify an individual for a job of critical importance.

President Kazykhanov made statements public about his weaknesses in major international news media, and gave interviews that stunned even the most ardent supporters of Kazakhstan.

The reforms implemented by Kazykhanov in Kazakhstan have a lot in common with Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost (openness) as well as perestroika (restructuring) initiatives within the Soviet Union.

Putin hopes to restore the Soviet Union through reforms similar to those that led the fall of the Soviet Union. Tokayev has also been focusing on economic relations and cooperation with Western and other countries. To ensure Putin's confidence, he took care to not to provoke his anger.
