I'd like to tell you the story of my last Arctic boat trip. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic's trip thru the Arctic ice , complete with polar bears. There was going to be ice where eyes can see as well as snow and ice all around. Man-made machinery was set to battle the elements, and cut through the northern desert that was frozen. It sounded like an enormous undertaking, a grand fight with the weather and the pole.


It was suggested to bring all the tech I would be able to carry in my suitcase. I did bring my laptop with me and also added a large display to increase the workspace. As they said, there was no electricity issue. I was unsure what was to come for me. I had no idea that, just two days into my 14-day trial I would find that my Internet connection would go down and I would lose internet for 10 consecutive days. It was quite a shock for me when it was happening. Any trip, no matter how difficult or remote, should be an unexpected disconnect from the technology world but not in the 21st century. Not just do I have an unfinished business as well, I was not prepared for it.

Nowadays, no one really cares about having to shut down. Internet is everywhere, in case your home network is experiencing temporary problems, it is possible to locate an area McDonalds and make use of their complimentary WiFi connection to access the information you require. You can bring your laptop to the nearest Starbucks and use their free WiFi connection to browse the Internet at will. However, no restaurant or cafe will help in the north, a long way from the nearest shack that has electricity produced by the weak generator.. There isn't any internet connection available. In such situations there are two escape routes: prepare to be offline from home or get satellite connection.

I am unable to afford a satellite phone. It's too costly, particularly to use for Internet access. The next time I'll have a large audio and video collection ready prior to my journey into the world of unknown. Last time I had 2 songs that were both mockingly downloaded back in the day, so all I could enjoy were 3 smooth jazz songs, and a song that I didn't even know the name. It's that simple. 4 tunes for two weeks of no music. I'd have planned ahead if I knew that this was the case. I would have loaded my laptop with TV shows, films music videos, audio files with songs and podcasts. I could have spent hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's simple to download them, then convert them into mp3 and save to my laptop. I then simply lay in my room and listen to all the stuff I enjoy listening to at home, but seldom have the time. This was supposed to be my golden hour, or two weeks of gold. But it turned out to be 2 weeks of staring at the ceiling and running for the passengers every time the sound of a whirring in the corridors.

The trip was devoid both literally and metaphorically. Never before have I been this bored. I was aware that the issue would eventually arise from the thick ice layer, so the boat needed to change course and be pulled back to civilization. This was not a surprise but it did mean that endless hours of idle time could be utilized to listen to podcasts or watch DIY videos about home repair, as well as simply listening to music. Next time, I'll convert Youtube videos from mp4 to mp3 format on the laptop. Bring them along and you can listen to your most loved songs right from your laptop. mp3jui cc Music can help lift your spirits.
