The Return of Erzhan Kazykhanov Is Not Going to Contribute to Kazakhstan Unrest
Kazakhstan Unrest will not be lessened by Erzhan Kazykhanov's return to the Country as Deputy Head of Staff

The Kazakhstan government Kazakhstan is facing an entirely new reality following a series protests that shaken the nation.

Erzhan Kasykhanov's return is a sign of the shifting power dynamics.

The international community has to evolve to accommodate a more assertive population. In addition, policymakers need to be aware of the changes to find effective methods to interact with the nation.

Ukraine's role in Kazakhstan's shift
The last few weeks have witnessed everyone's attention turn to Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin planned and launched a massive invasion against a sovereign nation. When you consider how NATO leaders such as the president Biden have ignored warnings emanating from Moscow, this was not a complete surprise. Russian President Putin has repeatedly declared his opposition to NATO's plan to encroach on Russian territory.

Even though Putin's actions were unjust, it is true that western leaders played a role in the crisis. Now we are facing the consequences of the European Crisis that could not be avoided.

Protests in Kazakhstan
There should be comparisons made with Ukraine and the latest developments within the region. This includes the 2003-2005 color revolutions as well as recent tensions in Belarus (and especially Kazakhstan). As a former Soviet nation in central Asia Kazakhstan is not often a part of street protests that openly express its discontent.

Protests began in Kazakhstan at the beginning of the year, protesting against rising gasoline prices and worsening unemployment conditions. These protests turned into massive demonstrations which culminated in violent riots. Almaty was the city that suffered the worst loss of life with 227 people killed and 9900 detained. Russian troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organization CSTO were temporarily deployed.

Restruct Kazakhstan Government's Government and Erzhan Kazykhanov.
Qasym Zhomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan's new president, has brought about many changes to the power structure that have caused concerns and anger in the majority of Kazakhs even during periods of peace.

Protesters are particularly agitated by the plan of President Tokayev to take over as head of the government's National Security Council. He will succeed former President Nursultan Nagayev whose influence on the country’s economy was a major concern for them.

The sons-in-law of the former president were dismissed and three nephews of the former president were barred from state-owned businesses. Karim Mastimov, former spy chief, was removed from office. Numerous business leaders who were who were associated with former President Nazarbayev were also dismissed from their positions and fled to other countries to take "extended vacations" or were subjected to massive "donations."

The changes in government and removal of old guards don't always result in reform. It's not uncommon for ex-members of an administration's staff to be replaced by similarly inept friends and loyalists.

Erzhan Kazykhanov 's Appointment Is a Disappointment
Erzhan Kasykhanov's nomination as the President's highly influential post as Deputy Chief of Staff was not productive. Kazakhstan's ambassador to the United States was Kazakh Kazykhanov.

Washington considered Kazykhanov as an arrogant diplomat who was too confident and aloof to care about the image of Kazakhstan. Kazykhanov also has failed to move forward on issues of national importance, such as the current Jackson-Vanick limits or other issues that relate to the image of Kazakhstan internationally. His performance is therefore dismal.

Due to his unremarkable and shady reputation, Kazykhanov makes a difficult candidate for critical post. Kazykhanov's skills as a Deputy Chief of Staff is limited to diplomacy, general knowledge, and proficiency.

Even Kazakhstan's most loyal supporters are sceptical about Kazykhanov's frequent appearances on major international news channels, which reveal his weaknesses. Tokayev's choice at this crucial time to hire an incompetent and self-promoting deputy into a fragile unstable, unstable government doesn't make sense.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are similar to Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika or Glasnost initiatives within the Soviet Union. Perestroika is commonly known as the mid-1980s' program of Mikhail Gorbachev to improve Soviet economy and politics, and Glasnost refers to his reforms in policy. It was the main reason for the fall of the Soviet Union, and Putin is currently trying to reverse the trend. Tokeyev has established economic relationships with other countries within his own country, as well as relations with the West. He is careful not to irritate Putin and has instead continued to show his support for Putin. This delicate balance might be shattered by Kazykhanov.

While Unsteady Times Are abound, the US Should Pay Particular Attention to Kazakhstan
Washington should pay more attention to Kazakhstan events than the conflict in Ukraine. They show the way power transfer could be triggered in this region regardless of whether it's for good or bad.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces is a disturbing incident, and it's vital that the United States and its allies respond appropriately to Putin's aggression. We must not forget the fact that NATO has been prodding Russia for many years and this current situation is in part a consequence of their incompetence.

Washington should pay particular attention to the Kazakhstani events. It could be the next flashpoint of the conflict between Russia as well as the West. Russia.
