CAIRO: Netflix's first Arabic film production was always going to be a major deal, but public opinion in Egypt was so polarised that critics asked for the platform to be banned within days of its debut.
"Ashab wala Aaz," one of several remakes of the Italian comedy-drama "Perfetti Sconosciutti" (Perfect Strangers), stars well-known performers from Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan.
The plot revolves around a group of friends getting together for dinner and choosing to spice up the evening by agreeing to share every text message, email, and phone call received with the rest of the group. As events proceed, the game uncovers surprising secrets about the group's members, touching on themes ranging from adultery and premarital sex to homosexuality, all of which are traditionally considered taboo in Egypt.

The film, which was released on January 20, quickly rose to the top of Egypt's most-watched list.
However, in the aftermath of the uproar, lawsuits have been launched against the cultural ministry and the censor's office for permitting the video to be broadcast, and MPs have asked for a special session to debate whether to outright ban Netflix.
Many online blasted famed Egyptian actress Mona Zaki for her role in what they called a "disgraceful" film.

In the midst of the uproar, the US streaming behemoth has remained silent.
Mostafa Bakry, a lawmaker from Egypt, has asked for an emergency meeting of parliament to examine Netflix.
Premarital sex is also frowned upon in Egypt, where it can lead to "honour murders," particularly in rural regions.
"This network targets Egyptian and Arab nationals... we should prohibit Netflix," Bakri told a private TV programme.
According to him, the video contains "more than 20 provocative profanities that horrified Egyptian households."
The one-and-a-half-hour film was classified unsuitable for people under the age of 16, despite the absence of any nudity or sex scenes.
Tarek Shennawy, an Egyptian film critic, was "surprised" by the attack on actress Mona Zaki.

Zaki, who played a wife imprisoned in an unpleasant marriage, was chastised in particular for a moment in which she removes her panties from beneath her dress.
Many people on social media saw the incident as a cause of humiliation for her husband, renowned actor Ahmed Helmi, and their daughter.
"How could Ahmed Helmi allow his wife to take this role in the movie?" one Twitter user wondered.
Another questioned Zaki's ability to be "unafraid for her daughter to witness her this brave."
Shennawy, on the other hand, maintained that "the movie's substance should not impact the personal or national honour of those who participated in it."
"We're conflating fiction with reality, which is quite strange."
