Innovation starts with the company culture

The EU announced earlier this month that it would offer grants for innovative ideas to hundreds of European companies in its Horizon 2020 program. All applicants who are successful will receive free business coaching as well as acceleration services. Following the demise of the Soviet Union, many once-successful industries went out of business due to years of under-investment or neglect and inability to respond to a rapidly changing market. The most affected were single resource communities that prospered due to a closed loop of ecosystem that was interdependent with mines, factories as well as manufacturing units.

This was especially true in Zhitigara (a region located in northwestern Kazakhstan) that has relied on local mining and manufacturing for decades. When the post-Soviet era began the local industry was afflicted by outdated practices and equipment, a lack of customer attention, and a myriad of obstacles that were not market-based which stifled creativity. It was only through making radical changes in management as well as focusing on the efficiency of refinement and enrichment processes and investing heavily in safety and health were capable of transforming and expand a failing local company. We adopted the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM), applying highly detailed, digital models to cut costs, improve quality and improve efficiency.
