Bts, The K

With BLACKPINK reigning at this year's Coachella Festival and tasting worldwide success, there's arguably never been a better time to be orbiting this musical world. So 한국문화블로그 delighted that our BA Creative Musicianship alumna Linda Quero is fast becoming a name to look out for in Asian music markets, enjoying a great career as a songwriter and top liner. But it would be wrong to see the group as monolithic – it is a disparate, international group, with different motivations. “K-pop fans engaged in Black Lives Matter-related activities and groups are predominantly based in the US and Trump’s anti-immigration attitudes surely grate, as well as his insensitivity toward Black Lives Matter related issues,” says Lie.

Why are so many South Korean’s in the entertainment industry taking their own lives? The answers, while by no means definitive, might be found by taking a broader look at the pressures and expectations that follow Korean entertainers and, perhaps more significantly, how they act as a reflection of Korean society as a whole. K-Pop Superstars is a must-have bible for anyone who loves BTS and an easily digestible guide to the band for newcomers who will come across the band in the next few weeks. The instrumental formsanjoarranges rhythmic patterns and melodic modes in a standard order from slow to fast.

South Korea: Left
When the genre was still a relative blip on the international radar, the artists’ approach to fashion remained raw and unfiltered. There was no Farfetch to express deliver emerging designer pieces, and big houses were hardly sending samples to Seoul. As a result, singers and stylists relied more on local finds and their own ingenuity to put looks together. Unlike western markets, K-pop stars aren’t allowed to be too sexually provocative in their music and performances.

Without any access to the resources of the south, North Korean residents are left without access to the internet as we know it and only state-controlled radio and TV. Those caught with large amounts of media from South Korea, the US or Japan can be punished by death, with those caught watching anything facing 15 years in a prison camp. As reported by The New York Times, Kim has declared a culture war against South Korea, spouting concerns his country will ‘crumble like a damp wall’ as a result of these ‘dangerous poisons’. Britain’s interest in the singles at the Australian Open is over after Dan Evans was knocked out in the third round by ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Bts Valentine
Today, there are just two surviving melodies totalling about eight minutes of extremely slow, stark and stately music, played only at the semi-annualRite to Confuciusin Seoul and in concerts at the National Center. This music uses only ritual instruments of Chinese origin, including the extraordinary sets of sixteen tuned bronze bells(p’yŏnjong)and stone chimes (p’yŏn’gyŏng). Thetangakrepertoire also consists of only two short orchestral pieces, known asNagyangch’un andPohŏja. 's name is supposed to stand for the more intense and captivating side of their personality, while "Velvet" is the softer side, both in image and music. It’s not always clear how concepts like these translate into actual music, but the duality definitely helped them break the mould of being either cute or sexy, but instead managing to play with these stereotypes.

The word “Hallyu,” is a Chinese term which literally translates to “Korean Wave.” The term was used to define the rise of Korean pop culture in other parts of Asia. Between the late 90s and early 00s, Korean entertainment began to gain popularity in Japan, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It was basically impossible to pick a TWICE song for this list, because all of them are K-pop staples, all of their dances are fundamental, and their performances never less than perfect.

From the iconic hand movement in “TT” to the pure joy of “Cheer Up” or the pop miracle that is “Yes or Yes”. Recent comebacks have seen TWICE mature and explore darker themes, which by this point in their career is fitting. So I landed on “I Can’t Stop Me” from late 2020, an 80s-esque punch of a song that makes me want to run - not from something but towards it.

As the first girl group in seven years out of YG Entertainment (home to K-pop legends Bagbang, 2NE1 and formerly, Psy), excitement prior to Blackpink’s August 2016 debut had built to fever pitch. There were big shoes to fill; the beloved, trailblazing four-member girl group 2NE1 were over and Blackpink were expected to revive the bold EDM pop sound they’d embodied. Their debut, Square One, was an overnight smash, the insistent build of “Whistle” and cocky chorus on “Boombayah” making for a short but thrilling introduction. While many K-Pop bands have seen huge worldwide success over the past few years, BTS, which is made up of V, Jungkook, Jin, Jimin, Suga, RM and J-Hope, have led the industry. 한국블로그 is said to be attempting to impose harsher penalties on those who consume the media, with the country’s media also slamming the spread of the ‘anti-socialist’ influence. BTS was the first group since The Beatles to land three number-one albums on the Billboard 200 chart in a single calendar year.

This personal touch makes the band appear more relatable and authentic, and is reflected in their online presence on social media. The first major difference is that BTS’ lyrics focus on issues that don’t necessarily represent the clean image other K-pop bands have, and their lyrics are more concerned with perception of ‘wrong-doing’. Think of a constantly repeating foxtrot rhythm , and this onomatopoeic word becomes clear.

Steensen, in a collaborative effort with American sound artist Matt McCorkle, embarked on a journey to experience American old-growth forests first-hand. Their field work presented them with a database of visuals and sounds which they developed into the final installation. Catharsis draws on Steensen’s conception of ‘slow media’ whereby digital technologies can foster attention to the natural world and create new narratives about our ecological futures. With our planet at extreme risk, artists now hold the ability to sensitise people to the crisis and renew the relationship between humans and their natural environment, through man-made technologies.

During lockdown, Netflix premiered a documentary about the all-female group Blackpink, charting the band’s rise from obscurity to a 2019 performance at Coachella in front of more than 100,000 fans. The music video for “Show Me Your Pride” depicts the band’s members wearing cat-shaped masquerade masks until the end of the song, when one removes his mask to reveal his face as if stepping out of the closet for the first time. Kpop is a music genre originating in South Korea and is characterised by a wide range of different audio and visual elements. The genre was catapulted into the mainstream due to the success of PSY's YouTube sensation hit Gangnam Style.

As 2013 arrived, the effects of 'Gangnam Style' could be seen across the genre as labels tried desperately to replicate the success of the song and appease their new Western listeners. With this came international controversy with allegations of cultural appropriation from Black American culture; an unfortunate trend that still happens today. As well as entertainment companies, fans also utilise YouTube to promote their stars by recreating and circulating user-generated K-pop content such as cover dance clips and fan-cam concert clips. Due to practical attributes such as a quick and easy set-up, simple functions, immediate social networking and instant distribution, Facebook has now become the most popular channel to circulate and share K-pop content among fans .

Those tactics have just been repurposed from helping their idols with mass campaigns voting for them in online votes and lovebombing them with supportive messages to a more political bent – but that doesn’t mean the fandom was previously apolitical. Nor does it mean that their recent work should be viewed as an unabashedly good thing. Fans of groups pushed pause on harnessing their immense digital presence to boost their favourite bands, and redirected their abilities to political goals – literally. Supporters of Blackpink, a K-pop group, stopped tweeting a hashtag designed to promote their band’s collaboration with Lady Gaga in favour of highlighting #blacklivesmatter. It has meant appreciating the simple pleasures of a solid topline regardless of genre. It’s led to me questioning musical biases and probing conflicted feelings I have about any given song.

More From The Shropshire Star
The online marketing strategies of the K-pop industry, which target the global audience, also warrant critical attention. As mentioned earlier, digital media technologies—social media in particular—lie at the centre of these global marketing strategies. Most major entertainment companies hold YouTube channels actively to promote their artists’ new albums and music videos. For special events, they upload videos of their idol stars sending greetings to fans and promoting their events in different languages, including Japanese. Kim Young-Min states that SM planned and prepared their overseas business strategies during 2008 and 2009 by utilising Internet technologies . SNSD’s Japanese showcase indicates the power of social media in the realm of transnational cultural flows.

At the same time however, it has the power to inform and persuade, to touch peoples’ hearts and to make them feel connected to something larger than themselves. K-pop, South Korea’s pop music, is one of the most colorful and energetic genres on the current scene, but, as entertaining as it is, there is more to the industry, the music, and even the fans than one might assume. In fact, K-pop inspires fans to study the Korean language at Korean universities, and it brings them together in venues where they share exuberant experiences. BTS's reign has continued since 2015 with them dominating the charts year-after-year with hits such as 'Fire' , 'DNA' , and 'IDOL' . Since their debut in 2013, BTS have sold millions of copies of their albums and amassed billions of views on their music videos; at this point, if you haven't heard of BTS, you must have been living under a rock! Their R&B/Rap style of music has also set trends in the K-Pop industry with many other bands replicating the style, and labels trying to find their own versions of BTS to cash in on.

They’re also known for their bilingual beats, with music released and performed in Korean, Mandarin and Japanese. Made up of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Liza, the famous four are known for their single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, which is one of the hits to contribute to their insane amount of YouTube views and helped confirm their spot on major arena tours. Has become the best selling album in all of Korean history – so you know, they’re a pretty big deal. Last week, we decided to take a closer look at how K-pop is changing the world of pop as we know it and became an industry worth over five billion dollars. CoronavirusThe total number of positive cases recorded in Scotland since the pandemic started stands at 1,114,066. EmmerdaleMax posted a series of sweet photos of the couple celebrating their engagement and a video of the special moment itself.

Like many successful musicians, Blackpink understands the power in marrying the worlds of music and fashion. Their innate understanding of style has made them hot property, with the girls now FROW fixtures at Fashion Week. In September 2019, Jisoo popped to London for Burberry, while Rosé wowed at Saint Laurent . Meanwhile, Jennie found herself next to Cardi B at Chanel, for whom she is also a brand ambassador. These milestones came via a fandom that had grown rapidly since late 2016, but who had to wait eight months for 2017’s single “As If It’s Your Last”, then an entire year for its follow-up “Square Up”. One release per year was once standard in K-pop, when there were fewer groups fighting for a share of a small domestic market.
