There is no precise definition for the writing industry because it covers a broad spectrum. Professionally, however, it broadly refers to the sphere of ‘writers,’ characterised by skilful use of words in a variety of styles and techniques to relay thoughts and ideas (Shabdkosh, 2022 & Wikipedia, 2022).
The writing industry cut across:
Creative writings (lyrics, poetry, prose, screenplay);
Technical and academic writings (articles, projects, reviews, seminar papers, textbooks, etc.);
Printing and publishing (designing, proofreading, editing, transcribing, illustrating, etc.).
Driving Forces
The five driving forces of the industry as outlined by Benjamin (2022) are:
High threat of entry, caused by: a booming writers market; easy access to internet; and many writing and publishing platforms.
High bargaining power of buyers: Caused by increased number of writers. According to Benjamin (2022) writers should, nonetheless, emphasise payments correspond with value of their services.
Low bargaining power of writers.
Threat of substitutes: There are audio-visual alternatives and reliable software packages to aid amateur writers.
High Intensity: This is caused by a low writers’ differentiation.
Growth Options
The options for growth in the industry include:
Writing unique contents to build an audience;
Corporate branding through online advertising/marketing and websites focused on a niche;
Strong clients-to-writer relationship building;
Capacity building.
