Kazakhstan Unrest Will not be Eased By Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Re-election as Deputy Chief of Staff
After a string of protests in Kazakhstan and elsewhere, the government is forced to accept the new realities.
Erzhan Kasykhanov's return could be an indication of the shift in power dynamics.
The international community has to evolve to accommodate a more assertive population. Furthermore, policymakers must to be aware of the changes and devise effective methods to communicate with the nation.
Ukraine's Role in Kazakhstan's shift
In the last couple of weeks all attention has been focused on Ukraine for the past few weeks since Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and declared a full-scale war against an independent nation. This shouldn't be shocking, considering that NATO leaders included the president Biden not listening to Moscow's warnings was not shocking. Russian President Putin has repeatedly protested against NATO's plans to invade Russian territory.
Even though Putin's policies have been widely criticized and criticized by western leaders, they have to acknowledge that they are the ones responsible for causing the crisis. We are now facing the consequences of a European crisis that could not have been avoided.
Protests in Kazakhstan
An analysis should be conducted between the situation in Ukraine and the recent events in the region. The following includes information on the 2003-2005 color revolutions and unrest in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and elsewhere in Central Asia. Kazakhstan is an ex Soviet country in central Asia and rarely sees street protests that openly express discontent.
A series protests were launched in Kazakhstan in the beginning of 2012 due to the rising gas prices and the deteriorating job market. These protests turned into massive demonstrations which culminated in violent violence. Almaty was the city with the most loss of life, with 227 people dead and more than 9900 being held. The Russian soldiers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, (CSTO) were briefly in Almaty.
Restructure in Kazakhstan’s Government and Erzhan Kazykhanov 's Return
Kazakhstan's newly elected president Qasym-Zhomart Tokayev has made a number of changes to the structure of power within the ruling elite that has raised concerns, questions, and discontent in the majority of Kazakhs even in times of peace.
Protesters were particularly angry about President Tokayev's decision to replace former President Nursultan Nagabev as top position of the government's National Security Council. This was despite his influence over the economy of the country.
In the wake of these events, three former president's son-in-laws were defrocked from state enterprises and his nephew was dismissed as well as the former spy chief, Karim Masimov, was detained on treason charges. In addition to these officials, numerous people from the business elite associated with former President Nazarbayev have been forced to leave their posts, emigrated abroad to take "extended vacations" or had hefty "donations" imposed on them.
Reform is not always possible with changes in the government or removal of old guards. It is not uncommon for the administration's members to be replaced with equally ineffective relatives or loyalists.
Erzhan Kykhanov's Application is an unreserved
Erzhan Kasykhanov's nomination as President Tokayev's powerful position as Deputy Chief of Staff was counter productive. Kazakh Kazykhanov was Kazakhstan’s most inept ambassador to the United States.
Washington is displeased with Kazykhanov for being an arrogant, aloof diplomat, too self-confident and uninformed when it comes to the delicate image of his country in the world. Kazykhanov also has failed to move forward on issues of national interest such as the Jackson-Vanick restrictions that are currently in place and other issues related to the image of Kazakhstan internationally. The results are unsatisfactory.
Due to his untrustworthy reputation and a shady background, Kazykhanov is unlikely to be considered for important posts. Kazykhanov's skills as a Deputy Chief of Staff are restricted to diplomacy and general knowledge, and proficiency.
The most loyal supporters of Kazakhstan are not happy with Kazykhanov's frequent appearances on the world's top news channels, which reveal his flaws. Tokayev's decision to not allow an unpopular, self-promoting, incompetent deputy to enter a fragile state at this crucial moment is absurd.
Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms remind of Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika and the Glasnost initiative within the Soviet Union. Perestroika is a term used to describe the initiative Mikhail Gorbachev established in the mid-1980s in order to reform Soviet economy and politics is more popularly known as. Glasnost refers to his policy reform. It was the main reason for the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Putin is trying to reverse that trend. Tokeyev has established economic relations with other countries in his own, and with the West. He is careful not to upset Putin and instead has continued to show his support for Putin. This delicate balance could be upset by Kazykhanov.
During unsteady Times The US should pay attention to Kazakhstan as Well
Washington should pay more attention to Kazakhstan developments than the war in Ukraine. They demonstrate how a power transfer can occur in this part and whether or not it's positive or negative reasons.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a disturbing incident. The United States should take appropriate steps to stop Putin's aggression. It is also crucial to remember that NATO has been provocating Russia for years. The current crisis is in part due to their own incompetence.
Washington should pay attention to events in Kazakhstan that could become the next flashpoint in the war between Russia and the West.
