Kazakhstan Unrest Will not Be Eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Re-election as Deputy Chief of Staff

Following a string of protests which rocked Kazakhstan and the country's leadership, Kazakhstan's government is forced to confront a new reality.

Erzhan Kazykhanov 's recent return demonstrates the shift in power dynamics.

The international community must change to accommodate a more assertive citizenry. Furthermore, the policymakers have to be aware of the changes and find ways to communicate with the country.

Ukraine's Role in Kazakhstan's Shift
The past few weeks have seen the eyes of everyone at Ukraine in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin has prepared and began an attack against a sovereign country. It's not surprising, considering the way NATO leaders including the president Biden ignored warnings from Moscow. Russian President Putin has repeatedly rejected the NATO's efforts to intrude into Russian territory.

Although Putin's actions are unacceptable western leaders must admit the fact that their actions caused the crisis. We are now living in the aftermath of European crises that could have been avoided and it's fair to declare.

Protests in Kazakhstan
It is important to draw a comparison between Ukraine's situation and recent developments in the region. The following are the protests in Belarus especially Kazakhstan between 2003 and 2005. As the former Soviet republic, it's rarely seen on the streets expressing discontent.

A series of protests initiated in Kazakhstan in early 2012 due to the rising gas prices and the decline in the job market. The protests grew into violent riots and nationwide rallies. Almaty suffered the biggest loss of life with 227 people killed and over 9900 people detained. Russian troops of the Collective Security Treaty Organization were temporarily deployed.

Qasym ZhomartTokayev, Kazakhstan's elected president, has made several changes in the power structures within its ruling elite. This has raised doubts, questions, anger, and concern among many Kazakhs during peacetime.

In particular protesters have been indignant by President Tokayev's move to assume the post of the head of the government's National Security Council, replacing the previous president Nursultan Nazarbayev. His influence over the economy of the country was a source of concern to the protesters.

The sons-in-law of the former president were fired and three nephews of the president were barred from state-owned businesses. Karim Mastimov, former head of the spy agency, was defrocked. Many members of the business community who were associated with former President Nazarbayev were also defrocked from state-owned enterprises, dismissed and many went to Europe for "extended vacations." They also received large "donations."

It's not always the case that reform happens when the government changes or old guards are removed. It is not uncommon for members of an administration to be replaced by ineffective friends or loyalists.

Erzhan Kamykhanov's appointment is disappointing
It is counterproductive that Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov was appointed the prestigious post of deputy Chief of Staff, the president Tokayev. Kazakh Kazykhanov is the most ineffective ambassador of Kazakhstan to America.

Washington observed Kazykhanov as a cocky diplomat who was too confident and indifferent to think about the image of his country. His performance on national issues, such as restrictions on Jackson-Vanick and other issues that affect Kazakhstan's image abroad, is also disappointing.

Due to his unresolved and controversial reputation, Kazykhanov seems unlikely to be chosen for important positions. Deputy Chiefs of Staff require diplomacy skills, broad knowledge and expertise, none of which Kazykhanov is proficient in.

Even Kazakhstan's most passionate supporters were uncomfortable with Kazykhanov's appearances on international news channels. His weaknesses were exposed. It is absurd that Tokayev is bringing in a volatile, incompetent replacement for a weak government at such an important moment in.

Tokayev’s Kazakhstan reforms are similar to Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika or Glasnost initiatives within the Soviet Union. Perestroika is Mikhail Gorbachev’s mid-1980s reform program to improve Soviet economy and political. Glasnost refers specifically to his change in policy. The reforms were largely responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Putin is currently trying to reverse the trend. Tokeyev has established strong economic relations with both the West as well as the countries around his country. However He has not attempted to offend Putin. This delicate balance may be disturbed by Kazykhanov.

In Unsteady Times, The USA Should be paying close attention to Kazakhstan
Washington should pay more attention to Kazakhstan events , rather than the war in Ukraine. They show how a power transfer can occur in this part and whether or not it's good or not.

It's a pity that Russian forces have invaded Ukraine. The United States and its allies should take the necessary steps to stop Putin's aggression. But, NATO has been inciting Russia for a long time. The current situation is in large part due to their failures.

Washington should be aware the developments in Kazakhstan as it could become the next point of contention between Russia and the West.
