GlyphosateWhy farmers choose to grow crops that are sustainable using glyphosate: to ensure that we have enough food for the foreseeable future.
It's no secret that global population is expanding. It's no secret that the global population is growing. By 2050, it will grow to 9.7 million people.1 But the amount of land that could be utilized for agriculture around the world isn't expanding as fast as we are. This poses serious challenges for farmers, who must produce enough food products of top quality to feed Canadians as well as other people around the world.

Canada is the fifth-largest exporter of food products across the world.2 Canadian farmers will be crucial in providing food for the growing population. They will be required to provide more food than ever before.

To meet growing demand, farmers will have to produce 70 per cent more food by 2050. *Source The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, How to provide food for the world by 2050.

This growing demand is too much for farmers to handle alone. Fortunately, the latest tools and technologies, including herbicides like glyphosate can assist farmers manage weeds precisely and efficiently, which results in an environmentally sustainable and secure food supply.

What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a potent, non-selective herbicide used by land managers, gardeners farmers, and other people around the globe for 40+ years. It works by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that the plants (in this case, undesirable plants) require to grow. These enzymes are not present in either humans or animals.4 Therefore, when applied properly, glyphosate is not a risk to either.5

There's also a wide variety of applications for glyphosate, which goes beyond agricultural. It is used in cities to protect animals and people from harmful plants.6 It's also utilized for railroads to enhance the visibility for conductors and ensure that accidents are not caused on tracks.

Glyphosate and its use have been the subject of greater focus in recent years. While it is important to be aware of what goes into our food, it's worth noting that more than 160 international health regulatory bodies including Health Canada, agree that the use of glyphosate in a safe manner for humans can be carried out in a safe manner.

グリホサート must be able to understand what glyphosate means and how it is utilized and the effects it has on food production.

Glyphosate is a chemical pesticide that can be used in agriculture.

Farmers, consumers, and nature are all benefited by the use of glyphosate herbicides in the field of agriculture. グリホサート is crucial to effective weed control, a secure food supply and environmental sustainability. Let's explore every benefit.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (9 U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization), farmers worldwide are able to lose 30-40% or 60% of their crops each year due to pests and weeds. This is a devastating loss especially for farmers who are able to claim that their crops are their main source of income.

So, it's no wonder farmers are beginning to rely on the tools they rely on year after year. Glyphosate can be applied to crops that are resistant to glyphosate. This is a proven method of controlling destructive weeds.

Glyphosate is a herbicide which can give crops a chance.

Canadians and global consumers enjoy the benefits of plentiful and affordable food options.

The population is increasing and half of the agricultural land is at risk due to land degradation and desertification.10 This is leading towards increasing food insecurity. Canadians can pay up to 55 percent more for food if they do not adopt modern farming techniques including using Glyphosate.11

This could make it more difficult for us to locate the food we enjoy. Because of plant science, however, farmers will be able sustainably grow the majority of our favorite staple food items for the years to in the future.

Glyphosate is more than just a way to ensure that your produce is affordable. グリホサート helps farmers take care of what Cherilyn Jolly Nagle who is an Saskatchewan farmer, calls "their most valuable asset", which is their land.

We love to eat around the table.

Tools for crop protection such as glyphosate can be used to protect crops against pests and diseases. Farmers can grow.

42% more grains such as corn and wheat

72% more fruit

83% more vegetables & potatoes12

The benefits are evident. But is it safe to use glyphosate?

The answer is yes. Like all pesticides, it should always be used according to the label directions. Canada regulates glyphosate usage by two agencies that are the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) who inspects crops and verifies that they are free from pesticide residue. The Pest Management and Regulation Agency (PMRA) offers the regulatory guidelines and product evaluations for submissions.

Regulators make sure that farmers are using approved herbicides in a responsible and proper method. It is the responsibility of farmers and producers to ensure that there aren't unintended consequences for the environment, animals, and even humans.

Also, thanks to improvements in technology and the application of precision farming, farmers have the ability to leverage information to be more precise with their application of glyphosate both where it's applied and the amount applied.150

It is very rare that glyphosate can be found in food. It is uncommon to find glyphosate on food items.

Glyphosate is a component of sustainable farming practices

Farmers employ herbicides like glyphosate as part of integrated pest/weed management practices. This means they are using more herbicides than weedicides. Glyphosate has allowed them to adopt conservation-based tillage or non-till methods which provide long-term benefits to the soil, the air and the the environment.

- The reduction or elimination plowing/tilling land

Reduced CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon within the soil

- Improving soil health

- Reducing runoff , and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory agency in the world currently considers Glyphosate to pose an increased risk of cancer to humans at current levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to feed the entire world by 2050

It's more important than ever before that Canadian farmers are able to access the technology, tools, support and equipment they require to satisfy the food supply requirements of an increasing number of people.

Farmers will ensure that our food supply safe and plentiful by observing good agricultural food safety, food safety and pest management practices. Glyphosate is one of many instruments they'll use to ensure that Canadians as well as all other people around the world can access affordable and nutritious food.
