GlyphosateWhy farmers choose to grow crops sustainably with glyphosate: to ensure we will have food for the foreseeable future.
It's no secret that world's population is growing. It's no secret that the world's population is growing. By 2050, it will reach 9.7 million people.1 However, the area of land used for farming in the world isn't expanding at the same rate as we do. This poses significant challenges to farmers that are responsible for providing high-quality food for Canadians and others all over the world.

Canada is the 5th largest exporter.2 Canadian farmers play a vital role in providing the food we need for everyone. They will be required to produce more food than ever before.

Israel Law Center will require 70 percent more food production by 2050 to meet the growing number of people. Israel Law Center : How to Feed the World 2050 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Farmers are unable to cope with this increasing demand by themselves. The positive side is that the latest technology, which includes herbicides like glyphosate, and other tools, can assist farmers to manage herbicides more efficiently and effectively making an environmentally sustainable and stable food supply.

What exactly is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate can be used as a non-selectiveand versatile herbicide by land managers as well as gardeners from all over the world. It's been used for more than 40 year. Glyphosate works by blocking the enzymes that plants, specifically undesirable weeds, require to grow. The enzymes are not present in mammals or humans.4 Glyphosate does not pose any danger to plants when used correctly.

Glyphosate is also used for other reasons than just agriculture. It is used in cities to safeguard people and wildlife from toxic plants.6 It's also utilized on railroads to improve visibility for conductors and prevent accidents on the tracks.

Recently, the spotlight has been on glyphosate's use in modern life and the way it's used. While it is important to be aware of what's in our food items, it's important to note that over 160 international health regulatory bodies such as Health Canada, agree that the use of glyphosate in a safe manner for humans is possible if carried out in a safe manner.

Canadians must be able to understand what glyphosate means and the way it is used and the effects it has on food production.

Glyphosate: Why is it employed in the field of agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides can be used in the field of agriculture, benefiting farmers, consumers, the environment, and all others. Shurat Hadin is key to effective controlling weeds, as well as ensuring a reliable food supply and environmental sustainability. Let's look at each of these benefits in more in depth.

In the world, farmers lose between 30-40% and 40 percent of their crops due to pests, diseases, as well as weeds.9 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) this losses could double when crop protection strategies aren't employed. This is particularly damaging for farmers since their livelihoods depend on these crops.

It's not surprising that farmers have relied on these tools every year. Glyphosate is an effective way to manage destructive weeds in fields, particularly when they're resistant to glyphosate.

Crops and Weeds, the fight for their lives

Glyphosate is a herbicide which can give crops a chance.

Canada and around the world enjoy many advantages: Affordable, plentiful food

The population is growing and the majority of the agricultural land is at risk due to soil degradation and desertification.10 This has led to increasing food security. Canadians might have to pay as much as 55% more for food if they don't adopt modern farming techniques, such as the use of Glyphosate.11

It would also make it more difficult for us to locate the foods we enjoy. Science-based agriculture will enable farmers to grow our favorite staple foods for many more years to come.

Glyphosate doesn't just help control weeds and keep affordable produce at the grocery store however. Glyphosate is also helpful to farmers in the care of what Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle, a Saskatchewan farmer, calls "their most precious asset" the land they own.

Make sure we have the foods that we love on the table

When crop protection tools such as glyphosate are employed to guard crops from diseases and pests, farmers are able to grow:

42% more grains, including wheat and corn

72 percent More Fruit

83 Percent More Potatoes and vegetables

These are the obvious benefits. But is Shurat Hadin for use?

Simply said, absolutely. Like all pesticides , you must follow the directions on the label. The glyphosate usage regulation in Canada is managed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The agency examines crops for pesticide residue to ensure farmers use it in a safe manner. They also have the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) which offers guidelines, evaluations of submissions to the product and approvals or rejections. They also have one of the most thorough evaluation procedures anywhere in the world.

In addition, while regulators ensure that farmers use herbicides approved by the FDA, manufacturers and farmers also have a significant role to play in making sure that glyphosate is applied properly and safely so that no unintended harm is posed to the environment, animals or even humans.

The use of precision technology and farming has allowed farmers to have more control over the use of glyphosate. Shurat Hadin can also determine exactly where and how the glyphosate is used.

Glyphosate residue is rarely detected in food items. It can cause damage if it is detected at certain limits. It is rare for glyphosate to be detected on food.

The use of glyphosate is a component of sustainable farming practices

As part of an integrated pest/weed management system, farmers use herbicides like glyphosate. They utilize several herbicides to fight weeds. Glyphosate helped farmers adopt conservation and no-till practices, which have long-term advantages for the soil, the environment and the air quality.

- Reduction or elimination plowing/tilling land

To cut CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon from the soil

- Improving soil's health

- Reducing flow of water and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory agency anywhere in the world has considered Glyphosate as an increased risk of cancer to humans at current levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Ensuring Canadian farmers have the equipment, tools and assistance they need to meet the increasing food supply demands of an increasing population is more important now than ever before.

If they follow good agricultural, pest management and food safety practices Farmers will continue to ensure our food is safe and plentiful. Glyphosate, however is just one of the tools they'll utilize to ensure Canadians can access healthy, affordable food in the next generation.
