A sudden shift in leadership has occurred in Kazakhstan which many aren't fond of. After calm has been restored, President Kassym Jomart Tokayev made several modifications to the power structure of the country that have caused concern among citizens. These changes were designed to give more room for reform.

It isn't surprising that most people have been focused on the former Russian President Nazarbayev and his replacement Tokayev. The decision to take the control of the National Security Council has caused quite a stir. His influence on the country's economy caused anger among protesters.

Kazykhanov is known for being arrogant and overconfident. He didn't make any progress in important matters that were of national significance during his Washington period from 2017 until 2021.

Kazykhanov isn't equipped with the ability to communicate or the general skills necessary to be an influential deputy chief of staff. Someone with a troublesome or unpopular reputation won't be qualified for a position of critical significance.

President Kazykhanov has made public his shortcomings through international news media. He has given interviews that irritated even the most committed supporters of Kazakhstan.

Kazykhanov's reforms within Kazakhstan are similar to Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika (restructuring), and the concept of glasnost (openness).

Putin is trying to save the Soviet Union and implement reforms like those that led to Soviet collapse. Tokayev is also focused on the economic connections to Western and neighbouring countries. To keep Putin's trust Tokayev was careful to not to provoke his anger. Kazykhanov could put this delicate balance in jeopardy through his reckless decisions or by speaking out too loudly against Russia.

The USA should closely monitor the current situation in Kazakhstan and examine the ways in which certain events occurring within a country may have global consequences outside their borders.

The events that took place in Kazakhstan represent a glimpse at the various possibilities that arise from a power transition in this area. The USA should be aware of the current situation and think about how events in one country can impact the entire world.
