Most people can instantly improve their game by playing less hands. Try to be the tightest player in Texas holdem games. It doesn't matter if you are the tightest player, but it is important to be at least one of the three or four tightest players at the table. The simple truth of the matter is that the hand with which the best hand starts wins more hands than one who does not have the best hand. Playing only your best hand will give you the best chance of winning, both now as well as in the long term. As you become more experienced and a better player, you will start recognizing places where you can play a few more hands profitably, but until then play tight.
Also, consider how the players sit at the table. It is always best to be the last person to act. This will give you an opportunity to observe your opponents actions and help you develop a game plan.
