In the past, the living room was referred to as the parlour room. It was derived from the Old French "parloir" or "parler" meaning "to speak". Parlour originally meant an area that was used for talking or debating with others. The living room is still used for the same purpose as most families host guests in this room and converse with them. The living room is not just a space for eating, but many families gather to talk or have a chat. Therefore, it's referred to as the sitting room.
