GlyphosateWhy farmers prefer to grow organically using glyphosate to ensure that we have enough food for the foreseeable future.
It is not surprising that the world's populace is growing. It's no secret that world's population is increasing. In 2050, the population will reach 9.7 million people.1 However, the area of land that could be used for farming in the world isn't expanding in the same way as we do. This poses serious challenges for farmers, who need to create enough food items of good quality to feed Canadians and people across the globe.

Canada is the fifth largest exporter of food in the world.2 Canadian farmers will be vital in providing food to the increasing population. グリホサート will need to meet an ever-increasing demand, manage pests and diseases as well as weather variations and ensure their farms are in good health for the next generation.

Farmers are unable to satisfy this demand on their own. Modern technology, such as herbicides and glyphosate, are able aid farmers in controlling the weeds effectively and efficiently. This means an improved sustainability and stability of food supply.

What is glyphosate exactly?

Glyphosate has been used for more 40 years by land managers, farmers, and gardeners worldwide. It is a chemical that blocks the activity of enzymes that plants (in this instance, weeds that are not wanted plants) require to grow. The enzymes do not exist in either humans or animals.4 So, if applied properly, glyphosate is not a danger to either.5

Glyphosate can be utilized in other fields other in addition to agriculture. グリホサート utilize the chemical in their urban green spaces to safeguard the public and wildlife from poisonous weeds.6 It's also employed for railways to ensure the visibility of train conductors and stop fires from spreading across the tracks.7

Recent attention has focused on glyphosate's usage in our modern lives, and how it is used. While it is important to consider what is in our food and drink It is also important to note that more 160 health regulatory bodies, including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate, when properly used is safe to consume by humans.

Canadians are able to understand glyphosate, its uses, and the significance it plays in food production as well as sustainable agricultural practices. グリホサート can help reduce the stigma associated with this tool, which is one of many used by farmers to make sure that everybody has access to safe, affordable and easily available food.

What is the reason to use glyphosate for agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides offer a variety of benefits for farmers, customers and the environment. It is essential to efficient controlling weeds, as well as ensuring a reliable food supply, and sustainability for the environment. Let's look more deeply at the various benefits.

In the world, farmers are losing between 30-40% and 40% of their crops due to diseases, pests, and weeds.9 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), these losses could increase by a third when crop protection strategies are not used. It's a tragic loss especially for farmers, when you consider that the crops are their livelihood.

It's no surprise that farmers rely on their reliable equipment every year. Glyphosate can be used to treat crops that are resistant to glyphosate. グリホサート is a tried and tested method for controlling the destructive weeds.

Crops vs. weevils - the struggle for their existence

Glyphosate is an herbicide that gives crops a fighting chance.

Canadians, as well as consumers worldwide, reap the benefits of abundant and cheap food

The number of people living in Canada is growing, and the majority of our land that is used for food production could be inaccessible within forty years. This could lead to food security issues. Canadians will pay less than 55% for food if there are no new farming techniques, like the use of glyphosate.11

Furthermore, it could become increasingly difficult to obtain the foods we love. Farmers will be able grow more of the food staples that we love for a long time because of the advances in plant science.

Glyphosate isn't just used to in removing weeds and maintain the price of produce at the grocery store, though. It helps farmers care for the land that Cherilyn Jolly Nagle, a Saskatchewan farmer who calls "their most valuable asset", which is their land.

Keeping foods we love on the table

Farmers can prosper by using crop protection tools, for example, glyphosate. It protects crops from disease and pests.

42% more grains, including wheat and corn

72% more fruit

83 percent more potatoes and other vegetables12

These are the obvious benefits. But is Glyphosate really safe?

It is important to remember that all pesticides must be used according to label directions. Canada regulates the use of glyphosate through two agencies: the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) who examines the crops and ensures that they are free from residual pesticides. The Pest Management and Regulation Agency (PMRA) is the one that provides the regulatory guidelines and product evaluations for submissions.

In addition, while regulators ensure farmers use approved herbicides properly, manufacturers and farmers also play an important role in making sure that glyphosate is applied properly and safely so that there is no risk of harm to the animals, the environment or humans.

The use of precision technology and farming has allowed farmers to gain more control over the use of glyphosate. They can also pinpoint precisely where and when the glyphosate is used.

It is extremely rare for pesticide residues to be present in food items. However, it could nevertheless cause harm if it is. グリホサート is rare to find glyphosate on food items.

Glyphosate usage as part of practices for sustainable agriculture

In an integrated pest/weed management system, farmers apply herbicides, such as glyphosate. They employ more than one herbicide to fight the growth of weeds. Glyphosate has enabled farmers to use conservation techniques and no-till methods to provide long-term benefits to the soil and the air.

- The elimination or reduction of plowing/tilling of land

Reduced CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon out of the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing water ranoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory authority in the world currently considers glyphosate to be a cancer risk to humans at the levels at which people are exposed." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019)

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Now is a better time than ever for Canadian farmers to be equipped with the tools, technology and resources needed to meet growing demand for food supplies.

The most effective agricultural, food safety and insect control methods can help keep our food supply plentiful and safe. Glyphosate is just one of the many tools they use to ensure Canadians and others across the world can access nutritious, affordable food options in the near as well as in the near future.
