Phobia terjadi karena adanya faktor biologis di dalam tubuh, seperti meningkatnya aliran darah dan metabolisme di otak. Bisa juga karena ada sesuatu yang tidak normal di struktur otak. Tapi, kebanyakan psikolog setuju bila phobia lebih sering disebabkan oleh kejadian traumatis.
