Should Alberta’s fossils be protected?
• (YES) We have many fossils in Alberta, there is no way paleontologists can get them all, so collectors should be able to have some.
• (YES) If I find a fossil, I should be able to keep it.
• (NO) People who collect and keep fossils could be taking remains of an animal we know nothing about.
• (NO) Fossils are a valuable resource. We should protect them the same way we protect our other natural resources in Alberta.
6. How do we protect our fossils?
-The province now owns all fossils that are found in Alberta. People are allowed to collect fossils that are lying on the ground, but they must report anything they find.
-In some areas where many fossils are found, no one can pick them up. Only paleontologists are allowed to dig for fossils, and they need a special permit to do so. The fossils they find are sent to museums, where they are preserved.
* In short, if you find a fossil outside of a protected area (Dinosaur Provincial Park), it is on the surface of the ground, and you report your finding, you may keep it.
