Suriye Kürtleri iç savaşın başından bu yana yaşadıkları bölgelerdeki Asuri/Süryani halkı ve Araplarla birlikte çoğulcu demokratik laik bir özyönetim modeli oluşturdular. Halklar için umut olan bu özyönetim modeli insanlığıa karşı suçlar işleyen ve gücünü korku ve panikten alan IŞİD terör örgütü için önemli bir tehdit haline geldi. Bu sebeple IŞİD terör örgütü 1 yılı aşkın bir süredir Batı Kurdistan şehirlerine yoğun saldırılar düzenliyor. 15 Eylül tarihinden bu yana ise saldırılar Rojava devriminin başladığı ve sembolik bir öneme sahip Kobanê şehri üzerinde yoğunlaşmış durumda. Türkiye'nin lojistik desteği ve Irak ordusundan ele geçirdiği ağır silahlar ile saldırıya geçen IŞİD'e karşı halk savunma birlikleri (YPG) ellerindeki hafif silahlarla şehri savunmaya çalışıyor. Dünyanın birçok farklı yerinden bilim insanı, siyasetçi, sanatçı, insan hakları savunucusunun çağrıyla 1 Kasım günü Kobanê ile dayanışma günü olarak ilan edildi. Bu çağrıya kulan veren insanlar dünyanın X kıtada Y ülkede X şehirde alanlara çıkarak Kobanê direnişine dikkat çekmiş IŞİD faşizmine karşı Kobanê'yi savunan YPG güçlerine aktif siyasi ve askeri destek, sivillere ise insani yardım talep etmişlerdir.
