the one o'clock news served as background noise as a young boy huffed at the flowers he was trying to delicately weave onto the cross as yet another one fell out. it was april 5th, and easter was in exactly a week, so the small seaside village was adorned with crosses decorated with carefully woven flowers and delicately sewn brightly coloured fabrics.
the little girl sat across from him looked up from what she was doing. she wasn't from the village, anyone could tell from her accent.
"you're tom, aren't you?" she asked shyly.
"yep. who told you?"
"everyone knows you, my friend at school told me. she thinks you're reeaaally handsome."
"does she really?"
"yeah, she does."
"what's your name?" tom asked.
"i'm susie! and i'm eight years old and my mum and brother and me moved here three and a half weeks ago!"
"okay. i'm tom, i'm almost seventeen, and i've lived here my whole life. everyone knows me because my dad's the priest."
"i know that your dad's the priest! me and my mum and my brother all go to church on sunday! we were here for the morning mass today! what are you still doing here?"
"i'm making more crosses for the stall i'm meant to help out with next week. i wanted to sell cupcakes, but my dad wanted me to do this."
"can you bake?"
"yeah."
"my brother can bake too, he makes really good muffins."
"that's nice. everyone tells me that i make really good millionaire's shortbread. i wanted to sell some, but my dad insistent that i help him with the flower cross thing.
