Vasari'den bu yana bu gravürde şövalyesine aşık asil bir leydinin gösterildiği düşünülüyor. Lakin Rainer Schoch'un da belirttiği üzere, bu şövalyelik çağı olan 15. yüzyıldan bir kesit sunmaktan ziyade, Dürer'in zamanın ana temasını işliyor. Yani savaş zamanlarındaki aşkı. Savaş için yola koyulan asker, sevgilisiyle vedalaşıyor. Narin dokunuşlarına, birbirine aşkla bakan gözler eşlik ediyor. Şövalye veda hediyesi olarak da tüylü şapkasını sevgilisine vermiş.
Eser dünyevi duygulara sesleniyor ve mitolojik ögeler barındırmıyor. Kimileri eseri tür resmi(günlük yaşam resmi) kategorisine koyuyor. Fakat eserde alegorik anlamların yatmadığını söyleyemeyiz. Dürer'in erken zaman eserlerinin çoğunda olduğu üzere, burada da aşkın doğası üzerine bir düşünüş yansıtılmış.
