PROS:
- frame loom + flying shuttle --> increased productivity of textile workers, but eliminated the traditional scene
- limited industrialization, cash crops, irrigation schemes (Punjab Canal Colonies), urbanization, inoculation programs of the British Raj resulted in a population explosion, increasing the demand for clothes, and therefore cotton and silk in India. --> This created a market for the cloth from the first Indian owned (Tata) cotton mills.
- The introduction of sewing machines also revolutionized, or destroyed, depending on your point of view, the tailoring industry. With off the peg garments being mass produced in Indian factories.

CONS:
- cheaper imported machine goods from Britain (primitive Indian techniques couldn't compete with British factories)
- Indian cotton weavers had to sell their products at lower prices and give services at a lower wage
- high import taxes in Britain and European nations + mercantilism - Indians were not allowed to sell to other countries
- import/export taxes in Bengal --> price offered to locals was reduced --> reduced their incomes
- British took all the raw materials needed for textile production in India (led to lack of raw materials in India) and produced them in Britain - they were then sold to Indian markets.
- cotton mills built in Britain, some goods transported back to India, lowering demand for local goods
-British rule forced the industrialization of the industry, and therefore an almost total destruction of the local independent artisan hand spinning and weaving trades. With the spinning mule and water frame alone replacing the labour of 15% of the population, eg.
