Slide 6:

Group conformity is the process whereby people change their beliefs, attitudes,
actions, or perceptions to more closely match those held by groups to which
they belong or want to belong or by groups whose approval they desire.

This phenomena is very strongly observed in many groups where the behavior
of the entire group influences one's thoughts and actions, the members that
are trying to fit in the group mould their actions so as to suit the group,
so that they can get validation and earn their place in the group.

Slide 7:

The phenomena is found in very subtle actions.
Consider these two behaviors.
read Listening to the same music as your friends even though you don’t like it
and Becoming a vegetarian

both of these behaviors are actually examples of group conformity
but there is a very fine difference, the first behavior is simply
compliance where the person just tries to enjoy the music forcefullty
when in fact the person doesn't really like it.
Public behavior is changed but private believes remain unchanged.
The second behavior is identification where the person actually became a
vegetarian and stopped eating meat altogether even in the absence of the group,
meaning both the public behavior and private believes are changed.

Slide 8:

The status is a socially defined position or rank given to groups or
group members by others.

Slide 9:

There are three sources. The first is
1. The power a person wields over others.
Because they likely control the group’s resources,
people who control the outcomes tend to be perceived as high status.
2. A person’s ability to contribute to a group’s goals.
People whose contributions are critical to the group’s success tend to
have high status.
3. An individual’s personal characteristics.
Someone whose personal characteristics are positively valued by the group
That person typically has higher status than someone with fewer valued
attributes.
