When Amir returns home after endangering himself and successfully bringing Sohrab home, General Taheri worries about “the community's perception of our family. People will ask. They will want to know why there is a Hazara boy living with our daughter. What do I tell them?" This quote fits in with the General’s personality so far because he is known to hold his reputation very high. Amir responds to this with, “‘That boy sleeping on the couch is Hassan's son. He's my nephew. That's what you tell people when they ask’...‘And one more thing, General Sahib,’ I said. ‘You will never again refer to him as 'Hazara boy' in my presence. He has a name and it's Sohrab.’” This is the first time that we see Amir stand up for anything in his life. In the past, Amir was always a bystander as opposed to his father who would immediately step in to help if he saw something he didn't like. Amir finally begins to stand up for himself and others and talks back to his very own father-in-law for Sohrab and judging by how Amir has redeemed himself so far, he will definitely continue this behavior in the future.
