Hello and welcome to our presentation. Our presentation today is about Life on Land. And our UN SDG target is ‘’Take urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna and address both demand and supply of illegal wildlife products.’’ We have 4 parts in the presentation. These are the Introduction part, problem and solution part, compare and contrast part and the conclusion part. Let’s move on to the introduction part Ismail.
Problem Analyze
The first problem is poaching of protected flora and fauna species. Poaching is the destruction of endangered creatures by predators for their own benefit. The main reasons for this situation, there is not enough law enforcement in every region. Hundreds of animal guards are killed each year, especially in Africa. Another reason is easy armament. People can easily access unlicensed weapons and kill animals without permission. Also, as the endangered animals decrease, the food chain breaks. In addition, this situation can also affect local tourism.
Solution
The name of the project is ''The Mali Elephant Project''. This project has existed since 2003. WILD Foundation and ICFC (The International Conservation Fund of Canada) co-lead this project. The target location of the project is Mali's Gourma region (west Africa). The goal of the project is to conserve habitats continuously, reduce conflict between human beings and elephants. The project has 3 basic solution plans. Strengthening disincentives for illegal behaviour, decreasing the costs of living with wildlife and improving education and awareness. In addition, with the sponsorship of the project, a poaching protection team was established. During the 11 months with the poaching protection team, there was no poaching. This situation shows that the project is partially successful, there are many organizations that finance this project. Some of those: the Governments of Mali and the USA, and Woodtiger Foundation. As a result of successful missions, the Mali Elephant Project won the 'Equator Prize' by the United Nations in 2017. The project still continues its activities today.
Compare and contrast
The projects we mentioned have a general and common purpose is to protect animals and our world. Two of the projects we researched the ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and Education Society) and the MEP (Mali Elephant Program). They are continuing their work successfully. Thanks to their ongoing funds, they can regularly organize events and carry out projects. In addition, the MEP and the project “Bi-national Collaboration to Eradicate Wildlife Trafficking in Belize and Guatemala” receive financial support from governments. Also, since all projects only serve in their own regions, they don’t provide access to other countries. Now I’d like to turn to Mina for the conclusion part
