Clinical Facility Improvements Utilized by Medical Labs Through a Medical Kit

For Medical Labs that rely on complex DNA tests to analyze and determine a patient's medical history, affordability is key. Finding the most cost effective DNA test alternatives can be challenging. While pricing for sequencing has decreased dramatically in the past decade, new technologies like Accurate Genealogy have made the process much more expensive. Medical labs are forced to keep up with the demand, but some are having trouble keeping costs low. Now a lab may have to search for cheaper solutions to their predicament.

For Mako Medical Labs and the launch of Mako DNA in partnership with Advanced Nutrigenomics, the introduction of the Mako paternity test kit was the last revolutionary approach to redefining medical genetics testing. This highly innovative and technologically advanced DNA test method allows a medical lab to rapidly analyze the results of a DNA sample test and determine whether or not a parent is the biological father of an infant child. The innovative and cost-effective DNA technology from mako labs can save a medical lab millions of dollars every year when compared to the cost of doing the same tests using older DNA technologies. In addition to its cost effectiveness, this new DNA test solution will also allow for more frequent tests which can be used to monitor patients for potential genetic diseases. Further, this system can be used in tandem with other services to ensure the long-term preservation of patient medical records.

With the opening of the doors to new and lower cost DNA technologies by companies like Mako, it is important for healthcare labs to look at ways to reduce their DNA costs. Fortunately, the trend in the lab is moving in the direction of reducing DNA costs by evaluating less costly solutions to current challenges. In North Carolina, two DNA labs are starting to join forces to develop better solutions for medical laboratory personnel and pharmacists who are faced with the increasing cost of conducting complex DNA analysis tests. The new initiative, called "North Carolina Low Cost DNA Collection and Analysis" (LCDA) is a collaboration between two innovative DNA laboratories located in Raleigh, NC.

The first laboratory is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is a recent graduate school that received funding from a Pharmacy Technology Research Institute grant. The U. C. School of Pharmacy has received support from the Pharmaceutical Association and the National Institutes of Health for this grant. Pharmacy technicians at the school will be trained to conduct DNA tests at a much lower price than what was previously done using older DNA technologies that were more expensive and time consuming.

The second laboratory is the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. This school has received support from the National Institutes of Health through a pharmaceutical industry research fellowship. A grant from the University of North Carolina helped fund the development of the low cost DNA analysis protocol that was developed at the second lab. This research will help to develop better and more cost effective DNA test methods for clinical use. As well, the University of North Carolina's School of Nursing is implementing a unique genetic meal plan that will be beneficial to all healthcare facilities across the state.

The Laboratory Services program was established to provide a solution for healthcare providers, especially medical staff, by training and certifying staff in various medical fields. The new diet helps to create a database of genetic variation within a patient's body that can be used to determine nutritional needs, allergies and potential disease states. The cost effective meal plans will also save money in administrative costs and reduce the labor hours needed to perform these tasks. Other benefits are that employees will be more productive and the quality of patient care will rise.
