This is why Mao is so important for any reading of Marx imo. Mao's great lesson was that there are so many mediations and over-determinations at the superstructural level that any crude model of 1-to-1 correspondence between historical development and the economic base is broken. Our praxis has to reflect the exceptional nature of society (exception is the norm, the "final moment" of economic determination sometimes never arrives), and must be equally intricate and multiplicitous.

For any good Maoist, socialism is an economic, political, and ideological event/phenomenon all folded into one where its development is only made possible through a careful, systematic analysis of the flows of contradiction as different contradictions mediate and transform one another which gives way to a subjective intervention in the realm of history and implies a politics of pure multiplicity (which coexists with unity and discipline in the 'struggle, unity, struggle' dialectic).
