if one takes a leave of absence for the semester, is it still possible to retain our university jobs/internships, should the work be able to be performed remotely? what if one is paid via federal work study?

as i asked before: how will social distancing guidelines be enforced? is it reasonable to believe that this method of enforcement will actually be effective? for many many students, socialization > rules. if the administration is as lax on this issue as it is on student drug use and hazing, for example, then people will die. asymptomatic cases are prevalent among this age group, and random sampling for testing is just that: a sample. one case is all it takes for it to spread, and it is simply unreasonable to have so much trust in the student population to follow guidelines.

since it is very difficult to ensure that all persons on campus are virus-free, is it morally justifiable to open up the campus this fall? is it worth the risk of vulnerable people (e.g. older professors, sick students) dying?

you wouldn't have to "chase around students" if campus was not open in the fall; it shouldn't have to be your responsibility, since students' behavior is unpredictable

This will take community-wide participation; our intent is not to chase around students, but we will need to respond to complaints or repeat violations. THe decision to be open was made in consultation with faculty, staff, health experts, our local community

Exactly. That is why it is so important the we all step up and that we ask those we see not following the rules to do so. Otherwise, plans may change for everyone.

i agree that it is the moral responsibility of all people to step up and call out others for not following the rules. if everyone had done this initially, then there would be hundreds of thousands fewer deaths. at what point will "plans ... change for everyone"? whatever it might take for us to get to that point, is it worth it?
