Bamboo Rods For Fly Fishing

<p>Good bamboo, when properly selected, cut, glued and proportioned is undoubtedly the best material to use for fly fishing. It's stronger than steel or solid hardwoods in strength and lightness.</p>

<p>The distinctions between male Calcutta and female Tonkin "canes" were once made by rod makers and anglers. But, in today's market, Calcutta has become a mere trade term. It is harder to find good bamboo, and a good piece from Tonkin is better than an indifferent Calcutta. However, male Calcutta is thought to be better than either the Tonkin or female. Steel vine, or African cane, is the cheapest form of split cane. It is light-colored and can be used to make inexpensive bamboo fly fishing rods.</p>

<h2>Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods: 6 Stripe and 8 Strip</h2>

<p>It is assumed that you already know that bamboo is cut and then glued together. This allows for the use of the hard enamel and reduces the piece's diameter. While some rods are made from bamboo that has been split into six sections (hexagonal), others have been divided into eight (octagonal), the most common construction is six strips. Although the eight-strip rod is considered to have better action than the cylinder, this claim seems more theoretical than practical. The tiny tips of the eight-strip rod will likely be softened by the amount of glue required to keep them together. Eight-strip rods are more expensive than six strips. If the angler is looking for a round bamboo fly fish rod, they will be better than six strips that have been planed down. Planing must cause injury to a rod. A six-strip rod made well will leave little to be desired.</p>

<h2>Special Features Bamboo Fly-Fishing Rods</h2>

<p>Bamboo fly fishing rod design is unique. The double-built rods are made up of two layers of split and glue bamboo. These rods are stronger and more durable than regular rods. They are used for salmon and sea fishing, but are not necessary in single-hand fly rods. A steel center rod, an English invention, is made up of a fine piece well-tempered steel that runs through sections regular split bamboo. This construction is claimed to have superior casting power, and only a pound more weight. This construction is popular with heavy fishing friends who have rods similar to this.</p>

<p>American manufacturer provides a rod of "twisted bamboo", which he claims equalizes strains and produces more action. Although I have not tried this rod, Perry Frazer's "Amateur Rodmaking", speaks highly of it.</p>
