Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

<p>Good bamboo, when properly selected, cut, glued and proportioned is undoubtedly the best material to use for fly fishing. It's stronger than steel or solid hardwoods in strength and lightness.</p>

<p>An old trade term for Calcutta, the name Calcutta was used by traders to describe the distinction between male Calcutta or female Tonkin "canes". Good bamboo of any kind is more difficult to find, and a good piece Tonkin is better that an indifferent Calcutta. The male Calcutta is superior to the Tonkin and female Calcutta. The African cane (or steel vine) is the cheapest type of split cane. It is light-colored and can be used to make inexpensive bamboo fly fishing rods.</p>

<h2>Fly Fishing Rods: Six-Strand and Eight-Strand Bamboo</h2>

<p>It is assumed that you already know that bamboo is cut and then glued together. This allows for the use of the hard enamel and reduces the piece's diameter. While some rods are made from bamboo that has been split into six sections (hexagonal), others have been divided into eight (octagonal), the most common construction is six strips. Although the eight-strip rod is considered to have better action than the cylinder, this claim seems more theoretical than practical. The tiny tips of the eight-strip rod will likely be softened by the amount of glue required to keep them together. The eight-strip rod is more expensive than the six-strip rod. Anglers who want a round bamboo fly fishing pole will prefer them to the six-strip planed down because planing can injure a rod. A six-strip rod made well will leave little to be desired.</p>

<p>Double-built bamboo fly fishing rods are a new innovation in bamboo rod making. They are made from two layers, each one of split and glued bamboo. They are more robust and heavier than normal rods. They are also stronger and hold their shape better than regular rods. The steel center rod is an English invention. It consists of a finely tempered steel piece running through sections of regular split bamboo. This construction is claimed to have superior casting power, and only a pound more weight. These rods are loved by heavy-fishing friends.</p>

<p>American maker provides a rod with "twisted bamboo", which, he claims, equalizes the strain to produce better action. I have never used this rod so cannot comment on its merits. Perry Frazer, author of "Amateur Rodmaking," has good things to say about it.</p>
