A glue trap seals weeks of searching for a venomous zebra cobra in north Raleigh.
Despite the efforts of animal control officers and law enforcement, a glue trap was finally able to capture the deadly snake on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday night, a 48-hour incident that generated nationwide interest.

The glue was removed from the cobra's body after being guided into a red bucket and brought to a safe location.

A striped snake was captured by WRAL cameras crawling onto a front porch on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. Looking around, its hood was visible as it lifted its head.

After confirming the snake was the one they were trying to capture, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back.

A 911 call from the same location prompted the search early Tuesday morning.

North Carolina, Raleigh Despite hours of consultation and preparation of law enforcement and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a Raleigh porch Wednesday night, capping an incident that drew widespread attention.

Cobras were placed inside red buckets and taken to a safe location so the glue could be removed completely from their bodies.

Joan Nelson said she was relieved that the ordeal was over.

'I feel very safe now,' she said. It feels good to be outside now, even walking on my deck. Nevertheless, I feel somewhat sorry for the snake.

Snakes can spit up to nine feet and are faster than most snakes. A morning dog walk turns into a dangerous event when the snake spits this wide. Apparently, African Snakebite Institute believes the snake is very dangerous. An animal's venom could cause the victim's nervous system to shut down.

One would feel immediate pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting and diarrhea if stung by a cobra's poison. It would then lead to a high fever and breathing problems, which could cause respiratory failure.

An enthusiastic veterinarian, Salina Locke treats all kinds of pets at Avian and Exotic Animal Care.

Cobras of this kind usually do not bite. They spray their venom more often -- they are very accurate and attack straight in the eye, according to her.

Despite the risks involved, Locke does not recommend keeping this snake as a pet.

Sleeping people are more likely to be bitten. Bite victims could be plagued with health problems for years, studies show.

Police searched a home on 6917 Chamonix Place on Tuesday, near where the cobra was last seen.

In March, there was an issue with the animals at that home. They returned on Monday and Tuesday after the zebra cobra was discovered on a porch about a half mile away.

There are county records showing that Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at that address. An account linked to Keith Gifford's name features several photos of snakes belonging to his son, Christopher.

TikTok user Christopher Gifford has more than 460000 followers. He says he has a 7-foot-long zebra cobra on one of his posts.
