North Raleigh's days-long search for a venomous zebra cobra ends with a glue trap.
Despite the consultation and preparation by animal control officers, a glue trap was ultimately deployed to capture a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday, a 48-hour incident that generated nationwide interest.

Cobras in red buckets are guided into a safe location so the glue on their bodies can be removed.

WRAL's cameras caught the snake the previous day crawling onto the porch of a house on Sandringham Drive. Lifting its head, it was able to see its hood.

Before moving in to capture the snake, Animal Control officers moved camera crews to the back.

The city of Raleigh, N.C., is the state capital. Following hours of consultation and preparation by police and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a Raleigh porch Wednesday night, capping an unusual 48-hour saga that garnered national attention.

Cobra was placed in red bucket and moved to a safe location to fully remove glue from its body.

An earlier video interview had captured a striped snake crawling onto a porch on Sandringham Drive from the siding of a house. Looking around, its hood was visible as it lifted its head.

After confirming it was the snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back before moving in to capture it.

Searches were launched early Tuesday after the same home made a 911 call.

Joan Nelson expressed relief that the ordeal is over.

She says she feels safe and happy now. It feels good to be able to walk on the deck and outside. Though I do feel a little sorry for the snake.

There has been a missing zebra cobra in a north Raleigh neighborhood where a striped snake is laying out on a porch.

The snake, a zebra cobra, is extremely fast and can spit up to nine feet away, making a walk with the dog even scarier. It is a very dangerous snake according to the African Snakebite Institute. A victim's nervous system might shut down upon ingestion of the venom.

A person hit by the poison would experience pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition to a heavy fever and breathing problems, respiratory failure could also result.

An enthusiastic veterinarian, Salina Locke treats all kinds of pets at Avian and Exotic Animal Care.

The species of cobras that are found in this area do not bite. Generally, they squirt their venom a lot and shoot straight for the eyes, she said.

The snake is not recommended as a pet by Locke due to its risk.

Bite incidents are most common during sleep. A study shows that those who are bitten may suffer long-term health issues.

It was Tuesday afternoon when police conducted a search of 6917 Chamonix Place, near the street where the snake was last seen.

Four police officers visited the home in March to investigate an animal problem. On Monday and Tuesday, they returned after spotting the zebra cobra on a porch about a half mile away.

At that address, Keith and Rebecca Gifford inhabit the house, according to county records. There is a Facebook account for Keith Gifford that shows several photos of snakes that he claims are owned by his son, Christopher.

Christopher Gifford has over 460000 followers on his TikTok account. His posts claim he has a 7-foot zebra cobra.
